Do you see them? No, not the beautiful nail job my 8 year old did for me. The larvae.
As I pulled the copious number of white top plants from the strawberry patch this week, I kept finding these little squishy guys on the flowers.
Now, I do like to follow the "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" mantra in the garden- but these little guys are in their larval stage. I thought they looked like beetle larvae of some kind but I wasn't sure. Would this little baby still be my friend when it became an adult? Or would its tastes change over to a love of strawberries?
In the complex world of holistic gardening, there is absolutely no way you can know everything. When we don't know, we need to call upon our resources. So I asked: my holistic management mentor, my sustainable farming mentor (who has been farming longer than I've been alive), my sustainable farming professor, my friend who worked at the insectory, and the small farms agent at CSU Extension. Not one of them knew what this little guy was.
But he was on nearly every white top flower I was pulling! Someone had to know!
Finally I reached out to an entomologist who works at CSU. She told me that I was right, it is a beetle larvae. A leaf beetle in the family Chrysomelidae. Beyond that, she didn't know much other than that this beetle will probably continue to just eat white top. How cool is that!

Just got some photos from one of yesterday's clients! Henna stains start out a bright orange color and darken over the next 24-48 from the time of the application. I can't wait to see this tattoo when it reaches its full potential!

Wake up, fumble through getting ready, the coffee pot decides to make a mess instead of coffee, lose your keys, borrow the spare from your husband get to the venue realize you don’t have the henna for the POP-UP HENNA SHOP, drive home, get the henna, come back get to the venue and realize…. They don’t open for two hours. DOH! So instead of having a breakdown, I’m having a breakfast sandwich at San Juan Brews.
