1 Month.

1 Month ago, Western North Carolina changed forever.

1 Month ago, North Carolinians showed the world why our state is so great.

1 Month ago, the largest whole-of-community response in history commenced to respond to the worst disaster in the Old North State’s history. Neighbors helped neighbors, first responders conducted heroic and unthinkable life-saving missions, churches and schools sheltered their community, and state and locals worked together as one team with one mission.

1 Month ago, in the midst of unspeakable tragedy, North Carolina made the decision that while we may have been knocked down, we will get back up and stand taller than we ever have before.

1 Month.

Do not forget Western North Carolina during this time. North Carolina stands with you.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FEMA Disaster Recovery Center Opening in Morganton on Sunday, October 20th

Burke County, NC - October 19, 2024: In response to Hurricane Helene, Burke County Government, in partnership with FEMA, is pleased to announce the opening of a FEMA Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) on Sunday, October 20th, at 0800 hours. Please note that the DRC will be on the south side of the building, closest to I-40. The north entrance closest to Parker Road is for early voting and WPCC Students only.

The center will be located at the Foothills Higher Education Center, 2128 South Sterling Street, Morganton, NC.

The Disaster Recovery Center will provide vital resources and assistance to individuals and businesses impacted by Hurricane Helene. FEMA representatives and state and local agencies will be available to help residents navigate disaster recovery resources, provide information on aid programs, and assist with FEMA registration and claims.

Key services offered at the DRC include:
• Assistance with FEMA disaster relief applications, even if previously declined
• Information on local, state, and federal recovery programs
• Guidance on the disaster recovery process
• Referrals to other community resources and services

The center will operate from 0800 to 1900 hours daily until further notice. Residents are encouraged to bring personal identification, insurance information, and any documentation related to property damage to expedite the process.

Michael Willis, Burke County Emergency Management Director, emphasized the importance of residents utilizing the center to ensure they receive the support they need: "We urge those affected by the storm to visit the Disaster Recovery Center. This is an essential resource for our community, offering guidance and aid to help people recover and rebuild."

Residents can contact Chris White, Burke County Public Information Officer, at (828) 796-4732 or visit the official county website at https://www.burkenc.org/2600/Hurricane-Helene.

Storm Helene was a horrible vicious and deadly storm…the attached is a difficult read…please…please…if you can help these folks, please do so…they are suffering and sure could use our support and prayers. Ben, Scott and their group will be loading up and heading back to Asheville this weekend…drop off your donations/contributions at Christ Wesleyan (US 50/32) right after the Alexander Local School complex…”always stay humble and kind”… ❤️🙏🏻

Hurricane Helene was devastating and so far the government emergency response hasn’t been nearly what we had hoped
