It didn’t make sense!
Who would think 2009 would be our start in the vacation rental business?? The market had crashed the year before. Jim had just finished a complete make-over on an investment home we planned on selling right away. He had done his usual magic and turned an outdated home into a masterpiece, but we were now stuck with 2 homes and 2 mortgages. No problem you say? Well, with 8 kiddos in tow, we were panicked. We had rented a vacation home the year before while vacation rentals were still a fairly new-ish market, and we loved it! We decided to jump in. Almost blindly. Our style was the “fake-it-til-you-make-it” sorta thing at first, but we soon found our style and rhythm. This business is not for the weak, but we figured things out and hung in there. It wasn’t too long before we could see how much we loved renting to guests and taking care of them. This business seemed to be a perfect fit for our interests, skills, and personalities. We also got to involve our kids with the housekeeping. It was definitely a family affair. There were some days we were literally sweeping out the door as guests were arriving. I’d yell to the bigger kids to grab the younger ones, take them around the back of the house where no one would see them, and get in the car….QUICK!! It was a hoot. We have THE BEST memories of those years, even though we went through some very unsure and very stressful times. The kids smile and laugh about what it was like to take care of the house together. Well, they laugh now.
Jim became a realtor with Century 21 soon after, and 11 years later… we’re still at it!!! We know the in’s-and-out’s of vacation rentals like no one’s business. It’s been a good chunk of our life. It’s Jim’s chosen profession. It’s what we love to do together. Jim is the main mastermind, but as we get closer to “empty-nester status”, I’ve been working more closely with him. Jim works hard, is devoted to his job, and has a caring, helpful nature that guests are drawn to. We love nothing more than to create an experience our guests will never forget.
