DIY outdoor winter containers for colder climates… a couple of tips to avoid and deal with frozen soil.

- If your containers are exposed to the elements and temps are falling, cover them with a garbage bag until you are ready to design. In MN, we are about to get rain for a couple of days and then temps drop and stay low. Soil will freeze very quickly.
- If you find your soil frozen, use a drill with a concrete drill bit to break it up. Replace dry and chunks of soil with fresh before designing.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who visited the North Central Florists Designer of the Year competition at the MN State Fair and voted for favorite designs called People’s Choice. We were asked to design two pieces inspired by a favorite song. My design called “Isn’t She Lovely” was voted as People’s Choice and it’s an incredible honor! I share this honor with fellow florist, of Toni’s Flowers.

It’s winter container time here in MN! Favorite season of all for containers. Some tips for DIY~ Locals…keep watering until we get consistently freezing temps. Tie items down as you put your containers together to keep things in place with the wind. Put birch poles in first and use your hand to dig into the soil if needed so they are locked in.
