BIG NEWS - the Alaska Long Trail is now the Alaska Traverse (AKT)! Since the beginning, the name “Alaska Long Trail” has served as a placeholder for the long trail concept. Over 2022-23, Alaska Trails actively gathered ideas and feedback to select a name that would encompass everything that this unique Alaskan experience would offer. Thank you all who contributed their ideas via Facebook or email or conversations! The next step is to work on the logo! Learn more at: https://www.alaska-trails.org/alaska-traverse

The Government Peak Recreation Area parking lot has over 24” of snow. Our crew is trying to plow it so we are asking that skiers wait to use the area. Plowing around parked vehicles will slow down our efforts.

What makes the Arctic Winter Games so important?

The Arctic Winter Games are the world's largest circumpolar multi-sport and cultural event! The event is a true celebration of athletic competition, culture, friendship, and cooperation between circumpolar (northern) contingents. 21 sports are featured including ice, snow and indoor sports alongside traditional Arctic Sports and Dene Games.

Every 2 years, participants gather from across the world's northern circumpolar regions in the spirit of competition and cultural collaboration. We look forward to welcoming our northern neighbors to the Mat-Su in 2024!

There's a back road that needs to be driven. The Hatcher Pass Road in Alaska is a stunning gravel road that winds itself through the Talkeetna Mountains.

What's underneath all that snow? Gravel! Thank you to Flintstone Inc. for being a corporate sponsor for all these years.

We've got a ways to go to get up that mountain. If you are interested in helping us get there through donations or corporate sponsorship please reach out to [email protected] for more information.

After our second season of operations, we're still hearing from so many people that they've only recently learned about Skeetawk. Please help us spread the news that there's a community oriented chair-lift serviced ski area in Hatcher Pass - Skeetawk!

A huge THANK YOU to Matanuska Telecom Association for being Skeetawk's official communications sponsor!

MTA recognized early on that if Skeetawk was going to achieve it's goal of being an accessible and affordable ski area in the Mat-Su Valley, we were going to need help reaching our community. Thankfully, they've come alongside and helped develop our outreach platforms in any way they could.

Alaska Trails is thrilled that 15 Alaska Long Trails projects were included in the budget passed by the State Legislature last week! This joint effort by the bipartisan group of legislators and trails advocates clearly demonstrates that trails are for everyone, a good investment, and something we can all agree on. Next stop, the Governor's desk for budget approval!

This will be the single greatest Thru- Hike trail in America. The Alaska Long Trail is coming soon……….and I am so pleased to have been a tiny part in helping to raise $40,000 to help complete it.

The real inspiration and go-getter here has been Heather Helzer, and what she has accomplished in two years with the Race Across Alaska!!!

This trail will make the AT look like a walk through your local city park. I have already seen 90% of the existing trail, and I can assure you, the views, the challenging terrain, the wildlife, and the absolute Grandiose Spectacle that is Alaska - is on full display along these 500 miles.

It's time for FAQ Friday!

The question we hear most frequently:
When is the next lift going to be built?

Answer: We're so excited for it too! The price tag for the next lift is substantially higher than our existing lift, and we are still in the fundraising stage. Once we have the necessary funding (roughly 10 million dollars), we will be ready to begin the install.

Keep reading for ways you can help us get there!

Did you know that Skeetawk is a non-profit and subsequently obtains the majority of our funding through donations and grants? We have the most amazing regional partners, who see our potential and have come alongside our efforts, donating their resources and finances to the cause. We are also seeking out growth opportunities through major grants and cooperation with local and federal government representatives. If you're excited about the benefits that Skeetawk's growth can bring to the Mat-Su Valley and surrounding communities, add your voice to ours as we request assistance to develop this area. At minimum we would ask that you reach out to our state representatives with the simple message "Support Skeetawk Ski Area". More info on how to contact them is located on their representative websites.

Take a look at the photo for more detailed plans on how Skeetawk will develop our lease area to promote safe outdoor recreation and support healthy lifestyles!

What’s better than a walk in the woods? A walk in the woods with local art as trail markers! This initiative is a collaboration between local artist Donna ‘the Strange’, BORA, Town of La Ronge Rec department, LA interiors, and our Cree language help Christine Ravenis!

wāpiscānis, kāhkākiw, maskwa, and mōswa are all freshly groomed and trailmarkers are up! The rest of the trail markers will be coming soon, and more maps to follow shortly.

Please note a correction of āhāsiw (crow) to the original intent of kāhkākiw (raven). If you are looking for a pronunciation guide, LLRIB does a great job with learncree.ca. If you use the Trailforks app, it would be a good time to refresh the map, for the most up to date listing.
