“Catch a leaf, a message brief." Only an old wives tale you may say. Yet, the grandmothers have long memories and know important details. And what ancient wisdom might their tales be rooted in?

The oracle at Delphi listened for messages in the rustling of the oak leaves, and the Cumean Sybil wrote her prophesies on leaves that blew in the wind to those that needed them.

PL Travers (author of the Mary Poppins series) writes of a Hallowe'en afternoon when the wind blows leaves into the hands of two children. Each leaf bears a timely message for them.

As the leaves swirl around you in this solemn Autumn, be in tune with the messages of the season. Listen for the voices of your ancestors. Look for meaning in seemingly ordinary things. Be a believer in the tales of the old wives.

Delphi was an early place of worship for Gaia, the mother goddess.
A sybil is also a prophetess.
The Cumean Sybil’s cave was near the temple of Apollo in what is now Naples.
