Our first garden we build was in 2013 when we lived in a subdivided neighborhood. We planted our favorite vegetables and shared most of them with the deer. We connected with a local farm’s CSA and loved the variety and freshness. We began to dream of having our own garden someday.
In 2016 we moved into the current site of Twin Root Farm. The property was a working horse farm when we moved in. We created our first garden in 2017 and it was a failure. It flooded out as it was located in a low drainage space.
After doing more research and spending more time watching our land through the seasons we knew what we wanted to do. In 2019 we continued to pull horse fencing, clear brush and fallen trees creating a space for our future garden to be. We used the wood from the horse stalls in the barn to make raised garden beds.
In the spring of 2020 we planted our first garden in the raised beds we built. The garden did fantastic and produced lots of produce. I read the book Vegetables Love Flowers by Lisa Mason Ziegler (@gardenersworkshopfarm) that summer and started learning about cut flowers. I couldn’t stop learning and made plans to add cut flowers to our garden next spring.
In 2021, we added 5 rows for cut flowers to our garden. We had an abundance of flowers and produce that we created a road side farm stand to share with our community.
During the winter of 2022, we created a logo and registered Twin Root Farm as a business with the state of MN. We added flower production and set goals to participate in a farmers market. That goal was achieved & new opportunities found is also: a wedding, flower bar events and selling to a local florist.
We have new goals for 2023 and can’t wait to see how they shift and change as the season goes on. Thank you for joining our journey. ❤️🌱
#marchintospring2023 day 11: How it Started with @bearcountryblooms
2022. What. A. Year. Twin Root Farm the business, was created, legalized, established and started to become a brand that we are proud of. Thousands of seeds were started inside our basement to later be transplanted out into our gardens & fields. We created new fields this year and almost doubled our cut flower growing space. We tried many new varieties of flowers some we fell in love with and others we will pass on next season. We will continue to try new to us varieties & refine what it is our customers love. We sold bouquets at local farmers markets & met many wonderful customers though our market time. We also learned that we’d like to find other ways to offer our flowers to customers next season. We offered limited number of summer subscriptions and found this to be something our customers loved so tripled our number of fall subscription offerings. 2023 we will offer spring, summer and fall subscriptions. We attempted three Flower Bars and are excited to be offering more of these amazing experiences for our customers in 2023. A few surprises in 2022 that found us were the partnership we formed with a local florist and the honor to arrange flowers for our first wedding. 2023 our goals are to build a website, connect with local florist and wedding/ event designers, offer more unique experiences for our customers to engage with our flowers. Cheers to 2023, we’re excited to see what this year brings to Twin Root Farm. Thank you to EACH and EVERY customer, we appreciate you so very much!
