These ladies have sure been fun to get to know. They are by far the nicest flock of hens we have owned & seem to be enjoying it here.
They LOVE mealworms and are treated with them on the daily. Everyone in the family is enjoying having chickens back to our little farm.
The kids are quick to run down and collect eggs, fill their water, check the feed and share our kitchen scraps. We haven’t yet had to clean the coop, so we will see if they are just as eager to help with that chore.
Today we welcomed a new flock of 14 one year old hens to Twin Root Farm.
They came with names & we are in conversation if they will remain or will gain new names.
We are grateful for these hens & have sure missed birds around the farm. We love eggs, but also caring for an animal is something that we are grateful to teach our children the responsibility of.
The lighting wasn’t great & the phone battery died so expect to see more of these ladies in the coming days!
This fall we started adding more perennial plants to our farm. There is a common phrase among perennial growers… sleep, creep then leap. Each word describes what the plants do each year they are establishing themselves as a plant.
Year 1 they sleep. They are working on their roots and typically don’t flower much.
Year 2 they creep. They start to grow both up and down- they typically will flower but haven’t yet reached maturity.
Year 3 they leap. They will flower and are at a mature age where they will flower and have great foliage.
So stay tuned for June of 2028; it’ll be a great peony season and only continue to become more established each year after.
We added just 2 varieties this year: Jules Elie and Bowl of Cream.

Harvesting tulips last week it was a mad dash and a lot of hours working to get everything harvested & up to the cooler for storage. Among the busyness it was important to stop, notice and soak in the beauty of the rain drops on the tulip blooms. Listening to the chirps and sounds of nature brought me joy. Do you hear them?
When there are so many things to accomplish in the spring garden it is easier for me to rush in and tackle my to-do list. Making time to pause & enjoy the beauty that is right in our presence is important.
