Hard to believe it took until the middle of September to get some decent variety of dahlia blooms in the bouquets. The Kelvin floodlight (yellow) and orange enjoyed a prolonged hide and seek game, but finally announced their presence!

We will not be in Marion this week due to the Chilhowie Apple Festival. Come see us at the Abingdon Farmer’s Market from 8AM to Noon.

This is a flower farm in the mountains of Southwest Virginia where the climate is so conducive to growing annuals, perrenials and bulb flowers that I love to share with friends and family.

I wish I could share with each of you the unbelievable joy and excitement I feel walking through the dahlia patch this morning seeing color on dahlia bulbs on the third day of June. I’m thankful we didn’t suffer the damage some of our neighbors did but I am also grateful for all the rain that we’ve received recently.

I believe my earlier assessment is solid and there will be blooms to harvest by next weekend.

Who can play a trumpet fanfare? Because I want you to know this is BIG NEWS! In the history of Alpine Acres Flower Farm we have usually had to wait until mid to late July for multiple dahlia blooms.

But not this year! No this year is so totally different. When I was working in the dahlias this morning I saw a dahlia bud. Then I saw another and another and felt that surge of excitement that comes with the promise of the first bloom.

So what does this mean for you AAFF fan? It means we will be selling dahlia bouquets in JUNE!! That is no misprint. There is photo proof with this post of buds that are less than 10 days from bloom.

We are considering a subscription service where you can have a fresh bouquet every week for a discounted price as opposed to the weekly amount. Give me your thoughts about it.

To all the fans of Alpine Acres Flower Farm we offer a hearty thank you for the terrific support during our off-season. I know you’ve probably missed blooms as much as I have and are looking forward to the beauty of the dahlias and the other companion crops that we pair with them. In this post you’ll see some of the companion plants were adding this year and a couple of new dahlias. I have some dahlias that came from cuttings from my uncles patch that will be new this year and I’m planning to make more cuttings in a couple of weeks from his patchTo add even more variety. You will be seeing more regular posts from now on This season. (HINT) There’s a really big post coming later this morning!!!

Now the preparation begins for next season. I need to divide the dahlias and then I will give them a heavy blanket leaves and Pineneedles to try to keep them from freezing during the winter. If anyone is interested in some value balls after I divide them send me a private message so I can keep up with it.

I went to the Dahlia patch to do some miracle Gro bloom booster to augment the rain we had last week and I saw two of the very nicest Kelvin Floodlight dahlias I’ve seen so far this year. Unfortunate for Abingdon Farmer’s Market fans this will be cut within the next couple of days because they won’t look this nice long enough to put in a bouquet this weekend.

For many the moisture the last 30+ hour was anywhere from a minor convenience to a major one but for the flowers on Alpine Acres Flower Farm it is just the medicine that they needed. The three individual pictures are new cuttings I made from my uncles patch that are showing new growth after this rain. I won’t be cutting any of those to sell this year just trying to get a good route established before end of season.
