✨SOME PERSONAL STUFF FOR YOU✨ February is nationally known as Black History Month…for the last few years I’ve been calling it Black Futures Month. The reason: history is important and what we learn from our past can help us write the future….aaaaand Black bodies have been denied futures too many times to count…sooooo I call it Black Futures Month to not only honor our ancestors and our histories, but also to honor the beautiful futures that lie ahead for each of us…

✨Things You Can Do/Keep in Mind, Not Just in February✨

❤️ Shop Black: there are incredible Black Owned businesses out there! Uplift by spreading the wealth and supporting Black biz. I’ll share some of my faves in my stories throughout the month!

🧡 Engage in self education: have questions, not quite sure you understand the systemic issues? There are some amazing resources out there to support learning and building understanding of the systemic issues around racism, anti-blackness and colorism.

💛 Intersectionality: remember that no one narrative speaks for the Black community. We are a diasporic people who share many similar lived experiences and also have vast differences. There is no one way to be Black.

💚 Understand what it means to be an advocate: just because you have a Black friend doesn’t mean you’re an advocate or ally…action and understanding what it means for you to take that action is what will define your advocacy/allyship…

💙 Collective Liberation: there is an African Proverb that says: “I am because we are”. It speaks to the very real notion that we are all interconnected and that our energy and existence is inherently tied to everyone else. This means liberation is only possible if we recognize that we cannot be free until we are all free.

✨THE BLACK LIST✨ - an ever evolving database of Black owned wedding businesses and wedding industry adjacent businesses. The “Blacklist” has historically referred to the list of people banned or excluded from accessing a particular place, thing, or job. While the etymology of the term is debated, anti-Black sentiment had, and continues to have, Black folks finding themselves barred or blocked from accessing certain things. While this may be the history (and very real present for many of us) behind the name, the goals of this Black List are about reclaiming terminology/voice/mindset and uplifting the brilliant Black business in and around the Sacramento Valley and Bay Area that specifically provide wedding related/adjacent services. It’s about community, empowerment, and collective voice. This list will be available to fellow industry folks as well as clients. While it requires Black owned (or part owned) only on the list itself , it can be shared with anyone regardless of identity. So, this is a call out to all the amazing Black Owned businesses that are in the NorCal wedding industry or adjacent to the industry, for your help in bringing this list to life. I would love to see your business on this list.
