As a former law enforcement officer/ mom, it was critical to ensure that my family would be safe at home while I was protecting the public. With hurricane season upon us, I want to share some tips on how best to prepare your homes and families. Protecting what matters most starts with being ready in advance!
Make sure your home has at least 72 hours' worth of shelf-stable (doesnโt require refrigeration) food, water, and medical supplies. Donโt forget essentials like batteries, flashlights, and any special items your kids might need.
Install storm shutters or use plywood to cover windows. Reinforce doors, and donโt forget to secure garage doorsโtheyโre often the most vulnerable! If you can afford it, accordion style shutters are easy to secure and to re-open when necessary.
Every family member should have a go-bag with essentialsโlike easy to dry clothes, medications, chargers, and important documents. Also, consider items that will help keep kids calm, like comfort toys or books.
Remove & store any loose items from your yard (furniture, planters, tools, grills). These can become dangerous projectiles that shatter windows in high winds and cause significant damage!
Make sure everyone knows where to go and what to do if evacuation becomes necessary. Discuss a meet-up location if you get separated and ensure your phones are fully charged in advance. Contact your friends in neighboring areas and have an agreement ahead of time to provide shelter for each otherโs families when an emergency strikes.
Invest in a generator if possible, and make sure your gas tank is full. Charge up all devices, including extra batteries for phones and laptops. Having some solar powered chargers is a great way to have a renewable source of energy.
Keep an eye on local alerts and weather updates. Apps and text alerts can help keep you informed about real-time developments.
Being prepared can make all the difference! Letโs protect our homes and keep our families safe this hurricane season. Stay strong, stay safe, and stay ready! ๐
