A very special #artistfeaturewednesday with JAX from Oakland! Read on to learn more about them and their video for “What If.”
-
Formed in 2013, Jax the Band is a Haitian-American family band of three homeschooled siblings from Oakland, California. The group dropped the music video for their song “What If” earlier this month, a track that was released as part of their debut album The Glo Up in October 2020. The two-minute song features dreamy vocals and harmonies from singer Sudan Jackson, backed by tranquil and uplifting instrumentals. The music video, filmed in various locations throughout the Bay Area, features quick cuts between a series of straightforward shots with Sudan at the center, mirroring the deceptively simple yet captivating song itself, and portraying the passage of time as her hair changes and the weather shifts.—Samuel Getachew, @kqedarts

Artist Feature Wednesdays: This week we wanted to give a big shout out to the amazing Oakland-based cellist @miapixley! Mia is the definition of a multifaceted artist and we’ve been so grateful to work with her this year! Read on to learn more about her and her work:
Mia Pixley, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and artist who uses her cello, voice, and music performance to playfully study and represent aspects of self and other, community, and the natural world. Similar to the collaborative lens from which she approaches her psychotherapy practice, Mia’s artistic collaborations lead with curiosity, honesty, humility, and humor.
She has a professional studies diploma in cello performance from San Francisco Conservatory of Music (Class of ‘18). Mia has studied classical cello with Joel Becktell, Wendy Sutter, (previous cellist of Bang On A Can), and Jennifer Culp (previous cellist of Kronos Quartet). Mia has also studied with Mark Summer (previous cellist of the Turtle Island Quartet) to learn extended cello techniques and study composition. Mia found her vocal resonance under the tutelage of legendary NYC singer, Ayana Lowe.
Mia is the lead organizer of a community based musical book club called Bushwick Book Club Oakland. The original Bushwick Book Club was started in 2009 by Brookyln-based singer songwriter, Susan Hwang. Prior to each live show, a book is chosen and select musicians read the book and each write an original song inspired by the book. There are now Bushwick Book Clubs all around, such as: New Orleans, Seattle, L.A., Malmo, Portland, Greenville, Toronto, and now, Oakland.
She lives in Oakland, CA with her husband, Kevin Shaw, and their young son. Kevin Shaw is the visual artist behind all of the art you see around this website (kwshaw.com). Mia cares about community, mental health, and nature. She currently is finishing her first full length album titled “Margaret in the Wild".

Wednesday Artist Features: Check out this beautiful clip of Sarah Gettys in the practice room and read on to learn more about this special Bay Area musician!
•
Sarah Gettys is a feminist singer-songwriter deeply influenced by jazz. Her music brings together melodies informed by decades of classical piano study, vocal tone, harmony, and improvisatory qualities drawing from the jazz tradition, combined with the simplicity and direct storytelling qualities of folk music. One of her mentors, Theo Bleckmann, describes her music as “sophisticated folk with a hook.”
•
A native of Northern California, she grew up in a small town in Mendocino County and began studying classical piano at age four. Her love of music and words inspired her to double major in Music (Classical Piano) and English Language Literature at UC Santa Cruz, and she is still currently weaving together these two passions in her songwriting. She went on to study jazz singing and harmony at the School for Music Vocations in Creston, Iowa. After returning to the Bay Area in 2014, she started teaching voice and piano lessons at her private studio, and writing music for her current project. Her mentors include Laurie Antonioli, Theo Bleckmann, Dar Williams, Erin Fishler-Branam, Jason Smith, Lucas Mattson, Nicholas Roth, Dena DeRose, Murray Low, and Peter Barshay.
•
Her music has a captivating, quirky beauty, with honest, thought-provoking lyrics, and her band features some of the best jazz musicians in the Bay Area.
•
Posted @withregram • @sarahgettys here’s a clip of a practice video I made of one of my favorite folk songs, “changer” by @anaismitchell . She’s such an incredible songwriter. This song is from her album The Brightness, which I love—also, Hadestown, holy wow.

Shoutout to Ivy team member @daniellewertzmusic, with this beautiful lullaby melody for your evening 🌙.
Posted @withregram • @daniellewertzmusic Late night loop pedal lullaby 🌙
•
Life is weird. Haven’t been singing much lately since a wisdom tooth situation went horribly wrong.. took out the loop pedal today and wrote a little piece of something that I thought I’d share before I wake up tomorrow and decide I don’t like it anymore.
I think it’s about a jigsaw puzzle 🧩
Hope y’all are doing okay out there ♥️

The sweet sounds of @amyd_music ☺️✨. Check out her Instagram profile in the comments below to hear the original version of this lovely cover of her twin sister @brookedmusic’s new song.
Posted @withregram • @amyd_music TWIN APPRECIATION DAY! ♥️
My twin sister @brookedmusic is my hero (she-ro). She shares a multitude of creative gifts like an ever-flowing source of inspiration. Even though she’s my “younger sister” (by 8 minutes 🤪), Brooke has always been my guiding light and my best friend. Her courage is the reason I felt comfortable writing my own songs to begin with. 🥺
SHE HAS A NEW ALBUM OUT, PLUS a book to accompany it on the way! Click the link in my bio to listen!!! Her healing soundscapes will brighten any moment of your life.
Here’s my cover of her positively MAGICAL song “Let’s be smoke.” Swipe to hear the album version. 🎻✨✨✨
