Today is TEDxUCLA's 2022 conference. Please be on time and take a look at parking details on our website 😄 From psychedelic treatments and sound therapy to wearing trash and eating junk, today's speakers are researchers and innovators from diverse fields and walks of life. Excited to see you there!
Meet Celena! She's a senior philosophy major, global health minor, and Marketing Intern for TEDxUCLA. She transferred from UC Davis during remote learning period and is so SO excited to help bring TEDxUCLA back to campus! She joined the team this year to work on copy writing, social media management, and miscellaneous event planning needs.
Speaker Curation Intern, Chris, is a fourth year sociology major with a minor in education studies. He helped choose the speakers and works with them individually to make sure that their talks are polished. Chris plans to take a gap year after graduation while applying for teacher education programs. He’s been an intern with TEDxUCLA for the past four years and is excited to see the event take place in person again next weekend!
Introducing our student interns! Emily is a fourth year communications major and music industry minor here at UCLA. She works as a Speaker Curation Intern and has been involved in TEDx for 6 years. She helped choose the speakers and works with them individually to make sure that their talks are polished. After graduating, Emily will be attending to study entertainment law, with a focus on intellectual property.
We are honored to have Dr. Tom Koraci... Oops, I mean actor Greg Germann returning for the 6th time as our speaker coach this year! He brings valuable experience to our team, helping speakers find their confidence and harness their voice. He's had roles in many well-known TV shows, films, and live productions including Grey's Anatomy, Law & Order, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Once Upon A Time, and Brooklyn 99. He also teaches public speaking courses at UCLA Extension.
Scott is one of our excellent Co-Curators! He designs and manages our digital communications while recruiting and individually coaching our speakers. Scott has been part of main TED since 1999 and brought TEDx to UCLA in 2011. This amazing event wouldn't happen without him, so a big thanks to Scott for all his time and insight!
Now that you've met our lovely speakers and host, let's meet the people behind the scenes! Josh is one of the people that truly makes this event possible. He has been a TEDxUCLA Co-Curator for the past 8 years, overseeing operations and logistics, while recruiting and individually coaching our speakers. Josh, thank you so much for your hard work and for bringing such an insightful, enriching event to UCLA each year!
Introducing our host! Straddling the line between art and activism, Kitty Felde, is an award-winning public radio journalist. An eloquent speaker and passionate learner, we're lucky to have her as our host for TEDxUCLA 2022.
Odds are, you haven't met someone from North Korea. Seohyun Lee grew up there, receiving what is considered a prestigious primary and secondary education in the highly censored country. Her experience is certainly unique. At TEDxUCLA, she shares what it's like adjusting to new information and realities now that she lives in the United States.
Rob's research style is immersive to say the least. What if we had to wear and keep all the trash we produce? What would that teach us? Rob has some answers...but you'll have to wait till June 4th 😄
The idea that using psychedelics could be have benefits for the human psyche is nothing new; the use of pe**te in indigenous North and South American cultures is just one example. However, it's been difficult to systematically and scientifically study psychedelics under modern US laws. Despite these challenges, Dr. Burton working to understand how psychedelics can be used to improve and manage mental health conditions.
Good psychiatrists and psychotherapists have rigorous education, legitimate credentials, and empathy. Still, there's something uniquely powerful about knowing from experience and personal trial and error. Russell Lehmann motivates us with supportive, helpful ways of living, drawing from his personal mental health history. Certainty isn't always given, so how can we adapt and find comfort? Join us to hear some of his advice.

We often describe effective solutions as ones that get at the "root" of a problem. Dr. Adriana Galvan uses neuroscience research to understand the "roots" of juvenile decision making, behavior, and psychology. The conference may be indoors, but what's happening outside is just as exciting! With an interactive mirrored LED exhibit and interdisciplinary arts showcases from these student groups, our entrance space is an experience in itself. Arrive a little early to take it all in and snap some cool photos!
Additionally, this year's event will feature a live performance from the acappella group, Resonance. Come out to show your support!
