Throughout my 20 yrs career in event AV production, I've often encountered a prevailing mindset among many AV production company owners: the belief that the techs working behind the scenes should remain invisible.

While I grasp the traditional rationale behind this concept,
I've always found it to be outdated.

I'm convinced that this mentality contributes to the lack of female representation in AV and in lead tech roles.

Keeping what's behind the curtain in the dark tends to perpetuate unhealthy patterns, one of which is the invisibility of those who make the magic happen.

Breaking this cycle by shining a light on our behind-the-scenes teams, empowering them to have a voice, is something I passionately advocate for.

I recently encountered another AV company's mission statement, proudly declaring their focus on both gear and people.

Yet, ironically, their website showcases the gear extensively while the people remain unseen.

Who are these invisible people?

What are their stories, and why aren't we seeing their faces?

If the people truly matter, why do you lead with your gear?

Is this critique harsh, or are we simply demanding a necessary shift in our industry? As AV production leaders, we must challenge ourselves to truly embody the principles of diversity and inclusion we so often discuss.

The framework, particularly its emphasis on Empowering Teams Behind the Scenes, is a testament to my commitment not to let this crucial issue fade into the background.

Empowering our behind-the-scenes teams means celebrating them, making them visible, and acknowledging their invaluable contributions.

It's time to bring awareness to the ongoing gender disparity in AV teams and take tangible steps towards inclusivity.

Let's not just talk about and ;

Let's actively practice it by highlighting those who have remained in the shadows for too long.

PS: below is a photo of me from 2008 at the Grove in LA, after working a 18 hrs shift throughout the night, programming lights for a runway fashion show for Christian Audigier, finally catching some Zzzz on a piece of truss.

Those are the stories we want to hear more of.
