Vegan Soul Story

Vegan Soul is the brainchild of Zakiya Courtney, a mother of a blended/extended family of 15, grandmother of 50, great-grandmother to 16. She is has been married 40 years to her life partner-Tony Courtney and an educator by profession, cultural community activist by heart. Preparing comfort foods is her passion.

With over 47 years of experience preparing food for a large family, Zakiya had to learn quickly how to prepare delicious soulful vegetarian/vegan food for children when the family decided to change their diet 28 years ago.

Family and friends increasingly asked Zakiya for her vegetarian/vegan food at family and community events. The most popular requests were for her 9-Layer Salad, “made from scratch” Biscuits, Southern-style Greens and Peanut Stew.

After winning several “Greens Cook-off” Challenges and doing live food demos for Fondy Market, the requests for tasty vegan food reminiscence of familiar comfort foods grew exponentially.
