Guyyyyyys, this was such a special one. ✨

Krista has been a dear friend for over ten years, and we've always bonded over our love of antiques, fashion and interior design. So when it came time to design her wedding florals, I knew I was in for a treat.

Pabst Brewery was the perfect backdrop for these two, featuring classic German beer hall fixtures like stained glass, dark wood paneling, and even a speakeasy in the basement.

And when it came to the flowers, Krista had a beautiful vision—deep purples, bright peaches, and stunning blue velvet ribbon. But she was also so trusting, and gave me creative freedom to go where the wind took me!

The result: a perfect summer-to-fall palette, featuring a few favorite seasonal blooms like clematis and ninebark. I'll be counting down the days until I can recreate this look next fall!

I've been alive for 32 years, and I'm still awestruck by the way nature changes colors each season.

Each spring, I find renewed hope in the blossoming branches and pastels that erupt at the flower market after a long, dark winter. And every fall, you can find me crying in Grant Park I take in the miraculously orange trees against Chicago's blue October skies.

If it feels like life isn't the right color right now, just wait. Those dead winter branches will blossom again, and those light pastels will mature into vibrant, confident magentas and yellows. In unreliable times, nature will be here for us — as consistent as ever.

A sunny, blue-sky day was the perfect backdrop for Lauren & Daryl's rooftop wedding this summer.

Over Labor Day weekend, the pair were married at the Penthouse in Hyde Park, celebrating with romantic, fluffy flowers in peaches, lavenders, blues and creams. An asymmetrical ceremony installation with organic floral sprays on airy gold stands set the stage. The wedding party's bouquets and boutonnieres mirrored centerpieces created by a friend of the couple, and brought a cheerful elegance to the day.

It's always extra-special when I get to flower for a friend, and Madeline & Kyle's wedding was no exception.

Madeline and I grew up in the same church, and our families have been friends for years. From the start of the wedding planning process, I knew it was going to be a fun one.

A bright raspberry and cream palette brought a cheerful pop of color to the day, and we used Madeline's family silver to create personal, one-of-a-kind centerpieces. A bouquet bar was a favorite feature at the reception, giving guests the chance to take home flowers of their own. And a New-Orleans style second line was the perfect way to kick off the celebration, honoring Kyle's musical background!

And of course, it's always an added bonus when Mertle herself officiates! We come as a package deal. 😉

That's right, November is chock full of opportunities to come flower with me. I'm thrilled to be joining for a very exciting Thanksgiving tablescape workshop on November 21!

First, you'll make your own dried floral centerpiece for your Thanksgiving table. Then, .ceramics will offer pro tips to create an elevated tablescape, no matter your personal style. We'll talk tableware and linens, share ideas to bring colors and textures together, and explore other ways to bring visual interest to your table beyond flowers.

Elizabeth & Carlos had us feeling peachy keen for their wedding this past June! 🍑

A cheerful palette of peaches and cream helped us celebrate early summer, and lots of fun greenery and unusual textures added visual interest to the floral design.

Elizabeth & Carlos share my passion for sustainability, and are green thumbs with a huge plant collection at home—so they knew that they wanted to bring lots of lush potted plants to their wedding, too.

Tall trees served as a photo booth backdrop that Elizabeth & Carlos could take home as a reminder of their big day. We also upcycled donated vases to use as planters for reception centerpieces, which then became gifts for guests at the end of the night.

You know 'em, you love 'em...simmer pot bags are back, baby!

These make for a great stocking stuffer, hostess gift, or treat for yourself while you're entertaining for the holidays. Simply pour the contents into a sauce pan, cover with water, and let it simmer on your stovetop on low. Your whole house will smell cozy and seasonal!

(We've even heard a few folks use these for mulled wine or as a cocktail garnish. Yum!)

A couple weeks ago, we officially ended our 2024 wedding season, and I can't wait to share all of the beautiful photos from the last few months.

But in the meantime...ya girl needs some rest. So, Mertle & Dot will be closed next week for a bit of R&R! I'll be back on October 21, refreshed and ready to hit the ground running for the holiday season. Thanks for your patience as I step away from my work bench!

Huge thanks to @blackmenflowerproject for inviting us to participate in Comerpalooza last week! Together, we created over 30 bouquets with the kids at @garycomeryouthcenter. The afternoon was a much-needed reminder of the joy flowers bring, and the generosity they inspire. It was a thrill to see faces light up at the sight of our table and hear kids talk about why they deserve their own flowers, or why they were excited to gift their bouquets to a loved one.
