Heartbroken by the tragic news from Tacoma, WA. Jacob Carter, the beloved co-owner of , was shot and killed while vacationing in New Orleans.

According to the NY Post, “Police said the gunman fled after shooting Carter, who was with his husband, Daniel Blagovich. No arrests have been made.”

A GoFundMe has been established to support Jake’s husband and co-owner, Daniel, and the Howdy Bagel team. The fund aims to cover the shop’s rent, other operating expenses, and employee wages during this challenging time. You can find the link to the GoFundMe in the bio. At time of publication, the GoFundMe has raised over $223k.

Howdy Bagel was more than just a bagel shop; it was a dream brought to life by Jake and Daniel. In a post from their Instagram page two months ago, they shared their journey: “A little intro for all you newbies! We’re Daniel and Jake (and Millie)! We opened Howdy Bagel’s storefront almost 6 months ago (wutttt). Starting Howdy during the pandemic after being laid off from our jobs, we began with door-to-door deliveries to friends and family via Instagram DMs, eventually expanding to Tacoma farmers markets, pop-ups, and bagel subscriptions. When a storefront on STW opened up, we nervously but excitedly signed the lease. We could’ve never imagined what Howdy would become, but we are forever thankful to our community, friends, and staff. Here’s to unexpected beginnings and grateful hearts. Love you, bagel babes. xx -Daniel, Jake, & the Howdy Crew.”

Jacob’s passing is a profound loss for many. Our thoughts are with Daniel, the Howdy Bagel team, the greater Tacoma community, and everyone whose lives were touched by Jacob’s vibrant spirit. Rest in peace, Jacob.

BREAKING NEWS: Set to Open First Manhattan Location

One of New York’s most beloved bagel brands is opening a new location at 34th Street and Lexington Ave in Manhattan. This shop marks Utopia’s first expansion from their renowned location in Whitestone, Queens, established in 1981.

“We’re very excited about the situation. We have a great location and a winning formula. We’re ready to roll it out,” said Co-Owner Jesse Spellman. “After 42 years in Queens, it’s time for us to take on Manhattan,” he added.

Known for hand-rolling an impressive 100,000 bagels a week, Utopia Bagels has cultivated a massive following on social media. They’ve made waves with their giant pizza bagels, the “Knock Test”, and videos featuring larger-than-life Co-Owner Scott Spellman. Their fame has been bolstered by features in “Worth It”, “F*ck That’s Delicious”, and numerous other mainstream media outlets.

Considered by many to be the best bagel in New York City, Utopia Bagels is set to introduce their iconic offerings to Manhattan starting Summer 2024.

Tried the “More delicious!” ChatGPT experiment with a New York bagel and cream cheese and…wtf?

No respect for the schmear! “Maximum deliciousness”??? Any NYC bagel joint puts more cream cheese on the bagel than that delicate little schmear

And what in the world did it mix in? Nuts? Raisins? Truly unhinged behavior

After being wowed by AI yesterday, today’s bagel experiment was a total letdown. I think ChatGPT needs to join an …

When I tried (delicious) bagel bombs at , I couldn’t help but reminisce about of Shark Tank fame, and it made me wonder - what ever happened to them? Long story short, they're no more 😨 Here's the condensed story:

Dreaming big paid off for Nick and Elyse Oleksak when they spotted a gap in the bagel market and launched Bantam Bagels, mini stuffed bagels that earned them a spot on Shark Tank and a deal with Lori Greiner. The couple secured an investment that catapulted their sales from $200,000 to $45 million, thanks in part due to a lucrative partnership with Starbucks. In 2018 they were acquired for $34 million by Lancaster Colony Corp. However, the tide turned with the pandemic, leading to the closure of Bantam Bagels in 2022.

So, who’s next in line for bagel fame and fortune? Will follow Bantam’s footsteps (with a happier ending)? Perhaps ? Or maybe it’s your big idea that’s waiting to take off. The story of Bantam Bagels reminds us: it’s all about taking that leap! You never know where it’ll take you

From a Reddit thread to a thriving business:

In Feb 2021, an Irish Redditor posted about a commercial bagel recipe in r/bagels. I replied and chatted with Steven Orr, then linked him with Scot Rossillo of who gave him a full rundown. 2.5 years later and is Ireland’s most most successful artisan bagel operation.

Steven’s wild ride from IT consultant to bagel entrepreneur is a testament to the power of the internet: pose a simple question on Reddit, and within 48 hrs, a world leading expert is sharing their knowledge with you.

Steven and Kirsty (the other half of the dynamic duo) are proof that it’s not the water - it’s the knowledge - and we are in a bagel revolution because of how the internet has democratized information that used to be a closely guarded trade secret.

I don’t know how unique of a trait this is, but the openness and willingness of the bagel community to share knowledge with complete strangers sure feels remarkable to me. I couldn’t be prouder to be at the forefront. Here’s to helping each other turn flour into gold.

The winning edge for the Best Bagel came down to one technique: the malt boil.

The top two bagels (from and .market respectively) both employed this method, standing out in the blind taste test conducted by and

While uncommon in NYC bagel shops, possibly due to its added cost and cleanup hassle, the competition results suggest that the malt boil’s impact on flavor and quality could be worth the extra effort.

For any bagel shop looking to elevate their game, experimenting with a malt boil might just be the secret ingredient.

Is anyone around NYC already doing this at scale? Can you spot the malt boiled bagel in the first pic?

Our 4th Annual New York saw over 1,500 people gather because of a shared love for one thing: the bagel.

The bagels our community make and market are not only the foundation of impressive innovation and entrepreneurship, but a source of delight for thousands and thousands of customers who count on our industry for a mouthwatering meal.

There are so many thank you’s in order:
-Thank you to the shops that open their doors at 5am, 365 days a year.
-Thank you to those who road-tripped and flew half way across the country to attend.
-Thank you to the artists that see the bagel as not just a food but as a creative canvas with infinite potential.
-Thank you to our Montreal brothers and sisters who came all the way to NYC represent their fine city and special kind of bagels.

And thank you to our truly incredible and devoted BagelUp team! You wouldn’t believe the amount of work that goes into producing this event, so thank you .work.for.food .everly .schuster.71 Yon, Uncle Mark, Christian, Elisa, Lisa, our Bagel Bassadors and others too many to name!

The world can be a hard place to exist these days, and that makes a supportive community more important than ever. *This* community is more important than ever. Our shared passion. Our shared values. Our shared camaraderie and friendship. We are a bagel nation, we are a movement and each and every one of you is a vital part of that.

So thank you all for, at sometimes great cost of time and expense, taking the time and effort to be with us, fully, with unbridled enthusiasm and dedication. See you next year!

Today is Evan Gershkovich’s birthday.

This isn’t a joyous milestone - it’s an outrage that Evan turns 32 unjustly imprisoned in Russia, instead of celebrating and eating bagels with his friends.
