1942 - Aretha Franklin, the singer who helped define the sound of soul and influenced countless artists across genres.
1969 - American singer Judy Garland’s gives what becomes her very last concert, at Falkoner Centret in Copenhagen, Denmark.
1969 - Beatle John Lennon and new wife Yoko Ono stage their 1st bed-in for peace, at the Hilton Hotel in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
1983 - Motown Records celebrated its 25th anniversary with Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever, a televised concert from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in California. The event, which featured performances by some of the label’s most iconic groups, included a one-off reunion by Diana Ross & The Supremes. Michael Jackson stole the show, however, with a performance of “Billie Jean” which featured him doing his famous “moonwalk” dance routine.
1985 - Prince won an Oscar for Best Original Song Score for the film Purple Rain.
1997- On this day in Hip-Hop history, Notorious B.I.G. released his second album, Life After Death. The double LP was released posthumously by Bad Boy Records.
2006 - Country musician, singer, songwriter and band leader Alvis Edgar "Buck" Owens, Jr. died. One of the most successful American singer-songwriters ever, he had 21 No. 1 country songs in the ‘60s and ‘70s with his band the Buckaroos. Beginning in 1969, Owens co-hosted the TV series Hee Haw with Roy Clark and remained until 1986.
2007 - Elton John set the record for the most performances at New York's Madison Square Garden when he performs there for the 60th time — on his 60th birthday.
2022 - Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters, dies suddenly while on tour in Bogota, Colombia.
