Happy Day! Today marks the Earth's closest point to the Sun in its orbit. Remember, while it might seem strange that it happens in the dead of winter for those of us in the northern hemisphere, it's summer in the southern hemisphere!

A different astronomy and space science related image is featured each day, along with a brief explanation.

The Quadrantid Meteor Shower is about to peak!

Kicking off 2025 with a dazzling display, this annual meteor shower peaks between January 3 and 4, offering skywatchers a chance to witness up to 100 meteors per hour under ideal conditions.

Unlike most meteor showers that originate from comets, the Quadrantids are linked to an asteroid—2003 EH1. This celestial debris burns up as it enters Earth’s atmosphere, creating the bright streaks of light we call meteors. The name "Quadrantid" comes from the now-defunct constellation Quadrans Muralis, where these meteors appear to radiate from, near the constellation Boötes.

The Quadrantids are known for their brevity. The peak activity lasts only about six hours, making timing critical for catching the show. For the best view, find a dark location away from city lights. The meteors will be visible across the sky, but their radiant point lies between Boötes and Draco.

The crescent moon sets before midnight, presenting no interference with the meteor shower. As such, we have a chance to see even the faintest meteors. Bundle up, grab a cozy chair, and let the cosmos put on its own special light show!
