The Purdue Music Organization Christmas show will be held at 3 different times this year, 12:00pm on Saturday December 7, 4:00pm that same day, and 2:00 pm on Sunday December 8th. Please remember that the Tippecanoe Chamber Music Society’s Holiday Brass concert is at 4:00 pm on Sunday the 8th—and try to purchase tickets to the PMO Christmas event for Saturday if you can so that you can fit as much early holiday cheer in as possible this year!

Also, the December 8th TCMS show will take place at First Baptist Church in Lafayette, not St. John’s (our usual venue). The address for First Baptist Church is 411 N 7th Street in Lafayette.

Thank you, and we look forward to celebrating the holidays with you!

Arnold Schoenberg was born in 1874 into a lower middle-class Jewish family in the Leopoldstadt district (in earlier times a Jewish ghetto) of Vienna. He was largely self-trained as a musician, and emigrated to the U.S. in 1933 as the N***s took power. They went on to ban his (and his students') music, labeling it "degenerate." He composed and taught in the U.S. until his death in 1951, including at the University of Southern California and UCLA. How do you think Schoenberg’s personal history affected what he had to say in his “Ode to Napoleon”?

To truly appreciate "Ode to Napoleon" it’s vital to grasp the historical backdrop. Written during World War II, Schoenberg critiques the hubris of leaders through Byron's poignant text. Focus on the interplay between the voice and orchestra, which can feel both chaotic and beautifully expressive. Note your thoughts as you listen; does this help deepen your connection to the music? His signature use of dissonance and unconventional musical forms heightens the drama. You may find that reading the libretto of Byron’s poem while listening enhances your experience: https://www.lieder.net/lieder/get_text.html?TextId=24441

"...As a chamber orchestra, it also feels like each person is so integral to the whole and that we are not only following the conductor but playing chamber music together. I also LOVE that SFCO has concerts for people of all ages and cares very much about inclusion and diversity in how it programs and presents music to the community."

Violist Clio Tilton delights in the diversity and excitement in her career. Equally at home with both modern and early music repertoire, she studied at Oberlin Conservatory and the Juilliard School and has been heard across Europe, Asia, and the United States. A Fulbright fellowship recipient, she spent two years studying and performing in Switzerland. Clio is a core member of the American Bach Soloists, the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, and the Chamber Music Society of San Francisco. She’s also performed at the Carmel Bach Festival and as a substitute with the San Francisco Symphony, and can be heard with orchestras across the Bay Area such as Berkeley, Oakland, California, and Santa Rosa Symphonies, as well as with Candlelight Concerts. Also passionate about teaching, Clio maintains a studio of violin and viola students at her home studio in San Francisco.

So fortunate to have you with us, Clio!

With sadness we mark the passing of Konstantin Jakimow last month. Along with Greg Kostraba, Konstantin co-founded the Tippecanoe Chamber Music Society in 1997. He was a passionate musician, and a regular at TCMS concerts. Konstantin taught cello students of all ages and levels of experience, and despite moving to West Lafayette as a pre-teen in 1980, he loved European culture and was fluent in German and French. He had a large circle of friends from around the world. There will be a memorial concert presented by friends and colleagues on Friday January 26th, 2024, at 4:30 pm at the West Lafayette Public Library. Contributions may be made in his name to the Tippecanoe Chamber Music Society.
