(Pluto moving into Aquarius + Sun into aqua on THE SAME DAY! tomorrow Jan 20) Being a Capricorn rising with my Sun, Venus, Mercury and Jupiter in Aquarius all in my first house, I feel this intertidal quite a bit these days. People seem to love and hate this flower, since it’s one of the most common types used for its variety of colors and ability to last for a really long time after being cut. Florists will always have carnations on hand in most situations. But people seem to hate on how commonplace they are. And maybe they are reminded of those flowergrams your besties would buy you in high school. Remember those? ………….. Carnations are of the Dianthus genus. Dianthus comes from the Greek words dios meaning “divine” and anthos which means “flower.” They are the flowers of the gods. Their origin story is rather brutal. In Greek mythology, the carnation was created by Artemis, goddess of the hunt and moon. She was coming back from an unsuccessful hunt when she came upon a shepherd boy playing music. In a fit of rage she blamed him for the poor hunt and gouged his eyes out. Carnations grew from the spot where the eyeballs landed on the ground. She was immediately regretful of her choice to spill innocent blood. In some stories she actually loved the guy who’s eyes she plucked out. Oh dear! Artemis is also known as Diana in Roman mythology which further links the myth with the flowers Latin name Dianthus. ………………. The carnation officially reminds us of mothers and their eternal love. One you can always rely on, who is always there in a variety of colors, and maybe doesn’t get the appreciation they deserve………………….. Cancer season, which is most of July, is represented by the moon, the feminine motherly yin energy. This is opposite to our impending season of Leo for most of August, the masculine daddy yang sun energy. These two right next to each other reminds me of how the female lions hunt for all the food (hey Artemis goddess of hunt and moon) and when the male lion (literally the symbol for Leo) shows up he gets to eat first and possibly all of it. Then the females go out and hunt for more, spending most of their time providing for the group
