Why I Flower

Fun fact about me, I have a bachelor degree in social work. Not exactly floral design; people often ask me why I became a florist, or even how I became a florist. Although my answer is always multifaceted , the short and sweet version is that I have just always loved flowers! When I was five, I remember going on walks to collect wild flowers, which I would then press and make into bookmarks. At the age of nine in an attempt to be more apart of my Polynesian heritage, I started making (trying to make) haku and traditional leis from any and all the flowers growing in my backyard. In high school, I was able to take an actual floral design class and put more method to my madness. Once I got to college, though I still loved flowers, and actually worked with a wedding planner, I was all about changing the world and wasn't sure I could do that as a florist (hence the degree in social work).

Quite a bit of time has past since then, and I have learned quite a bit about myself, the world, and flowers. I have learned I am one of those empathetic people who wants to take your problems and make them mine. I have learned that without even meaning to flowers are what I use to fix/ heal things. And finally, I have learned there is a place for me in this world and what I do does make a difference! (maybe just not the one I originally set out to make).

Currently, my love for flowering comes from creating and designing with a purpose. Tailoring each bouquet or arrangement to the beautiful people they are intended for. as morbid or weird as it might sound, nothing beats being a part of someones big wedding day, or designing a casket spray for their last. I love the people I get to meet, the flowers I get to know, and the chance I get as an artist to create.

Do you get to do what you love?
