“We never knew this place existed.” Current owners Michael & Diane Bombard get this a lot. Did you know that Stonehouse was originally built as vacation house for Attorney William Bulkely Smith and his wife, Nancy, in the late 1800’s? They lived in Worcester but came to Holden to enjoy the summer breeze on the hill. Ownership of course changed hands from one family to the next through the years. It still remains a hidden gem, but to some, Stonehouse is most commonly remembered to locals as a nursing home that operated from the 1950’s to 1992. The property was left empty for two years until Mike and Diane purchased the “fixer upper” in 1994. They set up their make shift kitchen in the nurses station, got to work on creating their family home, and now have an event space for all to enjoy! We’re always curious about the lives this home has lived before us, as we know the few pictures we have from 1949 are only a snippet. Do you have an old polaroid or a story of your favorite uncle who resided in room 4? We’d love to hear it!

One of our favorite wedding backdrops!

One of our favorite wedding backdrops!

The round barn at Hancock Shaker Village in Hancock, Massachusetts, in 1962 and 2023. The barn was built in 1826, and it was used by the local Shaker community until the village closed in 1960 amid dwindling numbers of Shakers. By that point the barn was badly deteriorated, with large cracks in the stone walls, as shown in the first photo.

In 1968, the barn underwent a major restoration, which included dismantling the exterior walls, repairing the foundation, and then reconstructing the walls using the original stones. Today it stands as the centerpiece of the Hancock Shaker Village museum, and it is one of the most recognizable and distinctive architectural landmarks of the area.
