Welcome back to the Bloom of the Day. Today, we are featuring Godesia. Godesia is from the flower species Clarkia Amoena. Godesia is also known as the “Satin Flower” or the “ Farewell to Sumner “ flower. The second is most appropriate since Godesia blooms at the end of spring. Godesia is known for its dainty cup shaped blossoms that have a peppery texture. Each blossom consists of four ruffled petals and eight stamens. Native to Western America, Godesia can be found growing in the coastal hills and mountains from San Francisco Bay Area to British Columbia.

Today’s Bloom of the Day is King Protea. King Protea is the national flower of South Africa. A unique flower, King Protea is able to grow in challenging environments, including fire prone areas. Its ability to regrow after wildfires showcases the concept of beauty emerging from hardship, which solidifies its symbolism of courage, strength, resilience and perseverance. Named for the Greek God Proteus who was able to change shape, shows it connection to transformation and embracing change. Proteas are the oldest living flowers on the planet, dating back 300 million years years, which dates them blooming around the time dinasaurs roamed the planet.

Rice Flower is our Bloom of the Day. Also known as Sago Bush, rice flower features small unopened flower buds that resemble grains of rice. There are some who associate rice flower with new life, but the Greeks referred to it as “immortelle/everlasting beauty.” This is because they retain their beauty long after their vase life has ended and as an everlasting beauty as a dried flower. Native to Australia, rice flower is a member of the aster family and closely related to chrysanthemums, marigolds and zinnias.

In honor of this Sunday being Palm Sunday, out 2nd bloom of the day will be Robolini Palm. A deep, rich green, Robolini is sometimes known as dwarf date palm, miniature date palm or Pygmy palm. Robolini is a species of date palm native to to Southeastern Asia, China, Laos and Vietnam. The female Robolini Palm produces a fruit called “dupe.” It is a reddish-brown to a dark purple fruit that is similar to a date, but not as sweet.

Today we will have 2 blooms of the day since we missed yesterday. Today is Lavender. A fragrant herb that is not only used as accents in floral designs, but also known for its culinary, medicinal and aromatic uses. The word lavender comes from the Latin verb “lavare” which means “ to wash.” Lavender belongs to the mint family and is native to the Mediterranean region in Europe as well as the Middle East and India. Throughout history, lavender has been used in aromatherapy to promote calmness and wellness. There are now over 40 different varieties of lavender that is grown worldwide.

Our Bloom of the Day is Leptospermum, otherwise known as Tea Tree. Leptospermum is a series of small trees or shrubs native to Australia and New Zealand. Leptospermum has small needle like leaves and showy flowers that bloom in either red, pink or white. The name Leptospermum comes from the Greek words “Leptos” meaning slender and “ sperma” meaning seed. Leptospermum is a symbol of strength and resilience and the interconnectedness of nature and culture.

Today, let feature Butterfly Ranunculus as our Bloom of the day. Butterfly Ranunculus is known for their delicate paper like petals that are shaped like butterfly wings. They have a natural wax coating that gives them a sparkle. Butterfly Ranunculus comes in several colors; blueberry sh, pink, yellow, orange and red. Unlike the traditional ranunculus that only blooms 1to a stem, butterfly ranunculus has multiple blooms to a stem. Butterfly Ranunculus originated in Japan.

Today, we are featuring Cut Rosemary as our Bloom of the Day. Rosemary is an evergreen shrub that has small needle like leaves and a strong pine like scent. The scent is released only when leaves are touched to crushed. During the spring and summer, Rosemary will produce small purple and blue flowers. Rosemary is often associated with memory and loyalty. In Ancient Greece, students would wear garlands of Rosemary while studying, because it is believed that it could strengthen your memory and improve cognitive function. There is a model belief that smelling Rosemary on Christmas Eve would bring about a year of good luck, health and happiness.
