It's design season and if there is a story I tell the most on mock-up day, it's the story of this cement charger.

I was meeting with J&J (and mom) last winter at . We had floral linens from five companies in the showroom with a goal of choosing one and then composing a place setting on it that didn't feel "garden party". Gold rimmed chargers and organic dinner plates were falling short. Someone pulled a cement charger off the wall and suddenly the whole thing made sense. It was an urban nod to J&J's Chicago home. It turned our flatware and glassware decisions in a contemporary direction and brought out the sophisticated drama of the floral linen we'd landed on. It became glorious, thanks to someone being distracted by a cement charger on the wall.

Cheers to a season where distractions can drive a design, a dream, a journey in some of the most perfect ways.

We found ourselves in Nashville because S&K are genuinely friendly people. S, a pilot, arrives early to work as a rule. A year or so ago, as he waited to board the plane he would fly that day, he started chatting with a passenger. Newly engaged, the conversation turned to wedding planning. Possibly, the random passenger was one of our brides. Possibly, she was blonde and lives in Chicago. The details of identity are fuzzy but thankfully for us, S remembered "Juniper & Lace Events" and K reached out and thus began our collaboration and friendship.

It wasn't Nashville in the beginning. We started a spreadsheet that detailed venues across Michigan and then expanded to Washington State, Florida, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Georgia. S&K are both pilots and love to travel. Nashville sounded like a fun town to bring guests to. The venue accomplished the fusion of historic + contemporary. We embraced Nashville with enthusiasm. Traveled there for planning and hung out together between meetings along with Bodie and Kevin (my pup and husband). We all returned to Michigan with the impression that Nashville is full of nice people. In retrospect, S&K tend to bring out the "nice" in people wherever they go.

On the wedding day, as guests were finding their ceremony seats, S&K could be found chatting with the bartenders. When it was time to introduce them into the dinner party, we paused while they finished telling their love story to a few enthralled servers on the catering team.

S&K described their wedding vibe as "having friends over for a dinner party that lingers in great conversations" and I credit them for pulling this off by nature of who they are. So authentic and genuinely thoughtful that even vendors felt like friends.

Thanks, S&K. You inspire us on so many levels. Cheers to airport conversations and friendly people 🥂.

Seating sets the tone sometimes and we had a lot of fun with it in K&S's Nashville wedding design. Merging his contemporary taste with her appreciation of texture and eclectic layers, we mixed three styles of black chairs for both ceremony and reception seating. Modern color meets vintage shape composition.

In keeping with the vision of "feels like a dinner party where guests linger in conversation over cocktails long after dessert", we brought in a lounge for some living room vibes. Fully appreciated for both chatting and posing. In the space, it also served to delineate the dancing space from dinner space (pro-tip from our amazing venue coordinator Ashley). Facing the dueling pianos, it hearkened back to an old world parlor scene but with the high energy music of modern times. Another fusion of his style and hers. Dance party in the living room. Epic.

Cheers to seating that sets the scene for people who make the moments.

Well, Tay, we understand there was a concert schedule conflict so you and Trav couldn't make it but still, "at every table we saved you a seat".

Speaking of tables, we're still talking about how knocked it out of the park with her floral arrangements and fruit composition among the mismatched vintage plates and record table names. Old world with a touch of Nashville or, as K & S described it during design - "like a dinner party at our home"

Mad props to the pros at for a knock-out dinner experience and to for bar service and for their beautiful space which was a home before it was a venue.

Dang, Nashville. Y'all know how to throw a party with the warmest sense of southern hospitality and we love you for it! This, combined with K&S's friendly Midwestern personalities and some Chicago dance moves to the tunes of dueling pianos, made for an incredibly memorable weekend. It was the finale to our season so we'll savor the recap thru a few posts this week, courtesy of the talented fun who delivered sneak peeks within 24 hours, edited en route to her vacation. 💕 🤗

When A&S said, "take a seat with our favorites", referencing dogs and horses from their family history (as table names), the feeling was clearly mutual. Both current pups claimed spots of honor at the altar and were the first to give a congratulatory hug to the newlyweds. There is something special about the animals who claim us humans as favorites, too. 💕 🐾 🏇

In the world of fashion, transitional season means I get to wear a whole range of tank tops, sweaters, lounge pants, dressy clothes, sandals and boots in the span of a week. I love it.

In the world of wedding days, transitional moments can be signaled by outfit changes. L, pictured here, did that beautifully back in May. I fully support multiple dress changes.

In the world of j+l, transitional season happens in October and November. The pendulum of summer event production shifts to winter office life by December but in the transition, there is this lovely mix of everything. Finalizing details for one more wedding next weekend, making mood boards for next summer, meeting colleagues for coffee, touring new venues, finishing projects and tossing around ideas for new ones. Reliving summer thru the galleries rolling in. It's this in between time that savors the last season, anticipates the next season and revels in the in between. I love it.

Friday in Philly swept us up in an experience of revelry that was, to quote a guest, "like in a movie". It was a high energy with deep emotion. Guests who danced with wild abandon between every dinner course also teared up during toasts.

It was old soul vibes on the mansion grounds with hand-written notes to each guest set on silver platters on an old dining room table. It was family photos set on the antique piano and fireplace mantles, dating back to the great great uncle who escorted the liberty bell around the country, the uncle who rocked drums in a 70's band and up to recent family weddings we've been part of.

The design had moments of grandeur in jewel-tone floral, flickering candles and ornate chargers. It had sexy glassware, silky napkins and emerald velvet linens. Black satin wrapped the stems of a burgundy rose bouquet. "Mad Men" vibes in the mansion. A scotch bar in the wine cellar. Bonfires on the patio. Philly cheesesteaks for the after-party shuttle ride. Classy style with spunky spirit.

I am convinced that some of the most treasured moments in life happen on wedding days. Music, food and fancy things set the tone and engage the senses but the kind of revelry that sweeps us away like a Friday night in Philly happens when the people show up. L&M led with their exquisite thoughtfulness. Parents hosted with style and so much heart. Guests cheered for every person who walked down the aisle, every toast given (even the ones that made them cry), every time Uncle Charlie drummed with the band, every chance they got for the newlyweds. To be SO loved and supported is a gift. To be a guest among such guests is a gift.

I left for Philly in the pre-dawn hours this morning. A quiet symphony of raindrops and falling leaves filled the air as I added my suitcase to the truckload of candlesticks, Tasty Kakes, bronze flower urns and silver platters.. Mary Ann has the road trip snacks and I'll pick her up en route outside of Detroit. Wendy catches the red-eye in from Denver tonight to round out the j+l team.

We're excited to celebrate L&M on an historic mansion estate, excited to celebrate a third wedding with this fun family, excited every time kind clients bring us beyond the borders of Michigan for romantic soirees.

Reminiscing on fun times we've had is some of the best road trip fuel.

It's the way that arched suncatcher captured the October light over N&P while they exchanged vows. It's the way the whole seated crowd erupted in cheers when P let his groomsmen down the aisle and the way they stood and blinked away tears when N walked in on the arm of her father. There was such a fullness of emotion and warmth of spirit in the whole weekend of events.

I credit this whole-hearted experience in part to the Italians - they are known for deep feelings and authentic expressiveness. I credit the wild enthusiasm also to a dedicated circle of friends who had traveled from Chicago and beyond with a clear resolve to celebrate with abandon. I credit the spirit of overwhelming joy to N&P. They were so intentionally present in the moments of the weekend, taking in all of the emotions, thoughtfully as aware of their guests' experience as they were of their own. They were, in fact, like the suncatchers on their dinner tables, capturing and casting the glow of light in remarkable fashion.

The weekend was designed to be an experience - rehearsal lunch, a winery excursion and a welcome party on Friday. A brunch overlooking the bay on floor 17 on Sunday. And in between, the beauty of Old Mission Peninsula, an abstract painting station and fall flavored libations for cocktail hour, an espresso cart with the donuts for dessert, a s'mores bar by the fireplace lounge, exquisite dinner and a high energy dance floor to close out the night. It was experiential by design but the way N&P and their people experienced it so fully is the part that exceeded our design and the part that will stick with me every time I see the photos and catch the glow of a suncatcher.

Turns out, when rehearsal is around noon, you can squeeze a wine tasting in between rehearsal lunch and the evening welcome party. Well played, N&P. You're definitely on to something in the art of rehearsal day revelry 🍷.

Thanks to the great teams at and for kicking off the weekend celebrations, for the wine tasting, for cute pumpkins and for pretty tealights.

Excited for all the pretty things, soulful moments, donuts and lattes this day holds in store ☕️!

MB&G's wedding was on a college football game day. As dedicated alumni with family who have refined the art of tailgate parties, there was no question that there would be a game lounge on the lawn after dinner. We pulled the cocktail hour couches and chairs around a couple tvs by the bar and plugged in the neon green sign as the sun went down.

The other critical element in this experience was sandwiches, a traditional game day staple. It took a few phone calls to arrange a special order up north delivery. More importantly, we needed a cute ice cream cart to display them. I made one more call to our friends at last winter, and in short order, they found one in Chicago and drove thru a snowstorm to pick it up as the newest item in their rental inventory. Some late night pizza, mudslide cocktails, cake featuring Jud (the great dane in a bowtie), and a dance party on the side rounded out the experience. While the final score didn't favor MSU, it still felt like a winning kind of night in the ways that mattered most.

02/10/2024

"Transportive" is a word we use sometimes in design planning. With MB&G, we talked about guests having a wow moment at the seating display (see yesterday's post) and then continuing into a tent so adorned in greenery that it would feel other-worldly. Transportive.

We started to feel transported on Wednesday when the sailcloth tent went up under blue skies and the shadow of white flags on the center poles danced in a breeze off the bay. Light filters thru sailcloth differently, and when drape went in on Thursday and delicate vines adorned the light lines on Saturday, the effect was such a balance of nature and romance. The tables were a play of green texture and botanical pattern in the shades of sky and vineyard. It was, in MB's words, "like an extension of the outdoors". Transportive and immersive.

The thing about celebrating in beautiful places is that the place itself transports. Details we add in design are really supporting cast, a visual invitation to be fully present, to be captivated by the place and moment.

The other thing about celebrating on a transportive level is that the people, especially the couple, lead that experience. MB&G were the center of our transportive design. It's a thing we never talked about. I mean, the weekend was to celebrate them, their wedding, their love. But they planned experiences around what they knew their guests would enjoy. They took time themselves to be immersed in the moments with the people around them. They led an experience that inspired comments like, "you've ruined me for future weddings" (totally my paraphrase of the sentiment).

The vision, the place, the weather, the vendor team - sometimes they all align. MB&G, you transported us all to the kind of experience we want to linger in. You did it beautifully. Thank you 🥂. Game lounge, Great Dane moments and ice cream cart details coming in our next post.

We knew MB&G's wedding was going to be beautiful from the first design meeting when MB talked about "making wow moments" and again at the mock-up meeting when G honed in on a forest green textured napkin that may or may not have been influenced by who he roots for at tailgate parties.

There were a series of wow moments in this one. We'll get to those. But this seating display deserves its own post. Guest names on acrylic over a map of the peninsulas we celebrated on all weekend, HAND-PAINTED BY THE BRIDE ON THE WEDDING WEEK 🔥 😍 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 on a structure built by Uncle M for this very wow moment. More recap to come. This moment just deserved a spotlight of its own.

An al fresco dinner scene with Spanish flair, fine wine and Grandma's peanut butter cake recipe for dessert kicked off MB&G's weekend in fun-spirited style. The bay glowed in sunset hues while the table glowed in candlelight. The weather, literally perfect. I'm not even sure I can call this work when the vision, the venue team and nature align so beautifully for such a treasured couple. So excited for all that today has in store!
