Riverwood Designs We, Joseph and Rob, work together to form a creative, dynamic, and efficient team, who brings vibrant energy and a unique perspective to your event.

Riverwood Designs creates wedding and special event floral designs throughout Virginia, and its owners are certified wedding and event planners providing day-of-coordinating and planning services. Joseph is a Certified Wedding and Event Planner and floral designer. His inherent obsession for logistics, organization, and time management ensures that the bridal couple, along with their family and fr

iends, relish the experience that is a wedding day. On the opposite end of logistics is his enthusiasm for creating the ceremony and centerpiece floral designs for weddings. Rob is a Signature Wedding and Event Designer and floral designer. Rob has been obsessed with interior, floral, and fashion design for as long as he can remember and loves to incorporate current trends and classic elements into the bridal bouquets and bridal party flowers he designs. His event management skills benefit from his Master's Degree in Education Administration. In our "other lives," we have worked in the fields of education and retail management. Along the way, we have created strong ties in a community that extends well beyond our home base in the Gloucester Point/Yorktown area. This is the benefit of Rob's 30-year-teaching career in York and New Kent Counties, his 13-year association with Colonial Williamsburg, Joseph's businesses in Charlottesville and Orange, and his continued involvement with the local community. We maintain a residence in Richmond that gives us a base of operations there when needed. Along with connections to much of Virginia, we bring an understanding of and dedication to exemplary client relationships. We will approach your wedding or event with the same enthusiasm that we approached our 2012 nuptial brunch celebration. WHAT HAPPENS IN OUR FIRST MEETING? Planning and designing your wedding should be thoughtful and fun. If logistically possible, we enjoy meeting couples in person, but we understand that meeting virtually or via email is often essential and just as productive in today's busy world. We carefully listen to your ideas during our first meeting with you, look at your inspiration pictures, and get to know you-your likes and dislikes. Joseph will note details and logistics, while Rob will often sketch the designs you envision. Rest assured, we create beautiful designs whether we meet with you in-person, virtually, or via email. WHERE DO WE DESIGN? We design for clients at venues throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia and beyond, but the couples who engage us hail from as far away as California, Colorado, Florida, and New York, but as close by as our next-door neighbor. WHEN DO WE OFFER DESIGNS? To ensure you receive high-quality designs and the personalized attention you deserve, we typically limit ourselves to designing only two weddings per day and less than 40 weddings per year. WHAT SETS US APART? Two things-our approach and our delivery. Our approach relies on relationship building. On the day that celebrates your most important relationship, we feel that you should feel at ease and truly enjoy working with all your vendors. We strive to make our clients comfortable and fully included in the design process from our initial contact. Taking an artistic approach to your designs, we pride ourselves on unique color and floral combinations. We carefully research and match flower varieties to your tastes, style, vision, and budget. Delivery of your designs is of utmost importance to us. As the designers, we believe that just as much effort should go into delivery as in the designs; we don't drop and run. Limiting the number of weddings we design per day allows us to give detailed attention to the delivery and set-up of the designs you deserve.

As we look forward to designing a wedding on January 25th at the iconic Commonwealth Club Richmond, we are reminded of a fabulous event we were part of last year. We especially loved the simple and elegant tablescape we created using wooden chargers, white dinner plates, and vintage majolica salad plates from . We designed miniature topiaries using a single rose surrounded by miniature roses in tiny cachepots that matched the larger arrangements' cachepots on the bar! ( Don't you love those tartan inserts on bar?)

The cold days of January are perfect for reflecting on the past and planning for the future. The snowy mornings have given us a chance to look back at some of last year's fabulous weddings. Halle and Alfonso's big day at Richmond's Cathedral of the Sacred Heart was certainly a memorable high point of November 2024.
Now, we are excited to be working with new couples for 2025 and 2026. If you are recently engaged, we would love to start planning a great wedding with you!

What did we do New Year's Eve?

We continued our NYE tradition coordinating and designing our third New Year's Eve wedding in a row yesterday! The fun couple and nearly one hundred of their closest friends and family rang in the new year . Table designs evoked the sense of a romantic winter using fresh greens and an assortment of candelights. The room was filled with tunes from the eight-piece band, and the party crowd never left the dance floor! We rolled out a gold bar cart filled with NYE party favors just before midnight to further enhance the festivities!

We coordinated and designed this wonderful wedding on a beautiful, sunny, and cool December day. The venue is a magnificent modern glass-walled venue tucked in a forest of oaks. The modern space inspired the black, white, and gold color palette softened by clusters of greenery and neutral blooms. and enhanced the natural beauty of the bride, bridesmaids, and moms. The guests mingled among the food stations with scrumptious fare such as Virginia raw oysters, beef tenderloin, mini crab cakes, sliders, coconut shrimp, mashed potatoes and an assortment of toppings, and a variety of mini sliders from . After dinner, guests were treated to a showcase of desserts by . The guests were swept off of their feet with dance tunes from !

Our second waterfront wedding this month was second to none! The weather forecast leading to the wedding was not promising, but Mother Nature came through. At ceremony time, the vibrant sun sparkled on the North River as a string quartet led the wedding party to the end of the aisle. Guests were welcomed into the sail cloth tent with classic white and pale blue floral designs and decor elements throughout. Delectable fare and cocktails energized the guests to dance the night away to tunes from a rockin' band!

As we prepare for our last Virginia wedding of the "pre-Labor Day" summer, we are reflecting back on some great summertime memories! We designed florals for Tess and Tristan's classic wedding at The James River Country Club in Newport News, Virginia. Aren't these two stunning?
These very elegant photos were captured by one of our favorite "friendors" to work with She ALWAYS brings a subtle sophistication with a hint of playfulness to her photos.

In honor of International Cat Day, we would like to introduce you to the feline member of Riverwood Designs' team. This is Mac-- named for Macavity in T.S. Eliot ' s Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. He is responsible for sleeping in sunny locations, meowing incessantly, and devouring "cate" (cat food pate).

Today, we also need to pay tribute to our Riverwood cat, who passed away on May 14 of this year. Gus, whom we affectionately called "boss man" because he always supervised our work (especially in the garden), was a gentle, dear cat soul whose presence is still felt around Riverwood Cottage. He was laid to rest beneath a beautiful new crape myrtle overlooking the York River which from henceforth is known as " Gus's Tree."

Hoo was that special guest at Saturday's wedding at the John Marshall Ballrooms in downtown Richmond? It was none other than the Cavalier mascot from the University of Virginia. The evening's festivities included a rendition of "The Good Old Song" performed by the groom and the other UVA alumni and the entrance of the Cavalier from the mezzanine level of the ballroom. All of this Wahoo merriment was planned by the bride who is a Sweetbriar "V***n."

What FUN! These special, individualized wedding and reception moments really make our jobs fun and neve dull!

We were excited to design and coordinate Chelsea and Daniel's wedding because they are now our "anniversary twins." Yesterday, we celebrated our 12th anniversary at an elegant black-tie wedding and reception with music provided by the Adrian Duke Project!
