Riverwood Designs creates wedding and special event floral designs throughout Virginia, and its owners are certified wedding and event planners providing day-of-coordinating and planning services. Joseph is a Certified Wedding and Event Planner and floral designer. His inherent obsession for logistics, organization, and time management ensures that the bridal couple, along with their family and fr
iends, relish the experience that is a wedding day. On the opposite end of logistics is his enthusiasm for creating the ceremony and centerpiece floral designs for weddings. Rob is a Signature Wedding and Event Designer and floral designer. Rob has been obsessed with interior, floral, and fashion design for as long as he can remember and loves to incorporate current trends and classic elements into the bridal bouquets and bridal party flowers he designs. His event management skills benefit from his Master's Degree in Education Administration. In our "other lives," we have worked in the fields of education and retail management. Along the way, we have created strong ties in a community that extends well beyond our home base in the Gloucester Point/Yorktown area. This is the benefit of Rob's 30-year-teaching career in York and New Kent Counties, his 13-year association with Colonial Williamsburg, Joseph's businesses in Charlottesville and Orange, and his continued involvement with the local community. We maintain a residence in Richmond that gives us a base of operations there when needed. Along with connections to much of Virginia, we bring an understanding of and dedication to exemplary client relationships. We will approach your wedding or event with the same enthusiasm that we approached our 2012 nuptial brunch celebration. WHAT HAPPENS IN OUR FIRST MEETING? Planning and designing your wedding should be thoughtful and fun. If logistically possible, we enjoy meeting couples in person, but we understand that meeting virtually or via email is often essential and just as productive in today's busy world. We carefully listen to your ideas during our first meeting with you, look at your inspiration pictures, and get to know you-your likes and dislikes. Joseph will note details and logistics, while Rob will often sketch the designs you envision. Rest assured, we create beautiful designs whether we meet with you in-person, virtually, or via email. WHERE DO WE DESIGN? We design for clients at venues throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia and beyond, but the couples who engage us hail from as far away as California, Colorado, Florida, and New York, but as close by as our next-door neighbor. WHEN DO WE OFFER DESIGNS? To ensure you receive high-quality designs and the personalized attention you deserve, we typically limit ourselves to designing only two weddings per day and less than 40 weddings per year. WHAT SETS US APART? Two things-our approach and our delivery. Our approach relies on relationship building. On the day that celebrates your most important relationship, we feel that you should feel at ease and truly enjoy working with all your vendors. We strive to make our clients comfortable and fully included in the design process from our initial contact. Taking an artistic approach to your designs, we pride ourselves on unique color and floral combinations. We carefully research and match flower varieties to your tastes, style, vision, and budget. Delivery of your designs is of utmost importance to us. As the designers, we believe that just as much effort should go into delivery as in the designs; we don't drop and run. Limiting the number of weddings we design per day allows us to give detailed attention to the delivery and set-up of the designs you deserve.

What an AMAZING wedding-- a delightful couple, a meaningful church ceremony, a gorgeous sailcloth tent reception at a historic venue, great food, a beautiful and delicious four-tiered cake complete with an heirloom topper, amazing energy from the band, and a packed dance floor until the end of the night! Who could ask for more? Our hearts are full after creating florals for and managing Shannon and Clint's special day!

As we prepare for our last Virginia wedding of the "pre-Labor Day" summer, we are reflecting back on some great summertime memories! We designed florals for Tess and Tristan's classic wedding at The James River Country Club in Newport News, Virginia. Aren't these two stunning?

In honor of International Cat Day, we would like to introduce you to the feline member of Riverwood Designs' team. This is Mac-- named for Macavity in T.S. Eliot ' s Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. He is responsible for sleeping in sunny locations, meowing incessantly, and devouring "cate" (cat food pate).
Today, we also need to pay tribute to our Riverwood cat, who passed away on May 14 of this year. Gus, whom we affectionately called "boss man" because he always supervised our work (especially in the garden), was a gentle, dear cat soul whose presence is still felt around Riverwood Cottage. He was laid to rest beneath a beautiful new crape myrtle overlooking the York River which from henceforth is known as " Gus's Tree."

Hoo was that special guest at Saturday's wedding at the John Marshall Ballrooms in downtown Richmond? It was none other than the Cavalier mascot from the University of Virginia. The evening's festivities included a rendition of "The Good Old Song" performed by the groom and the other UVA alumni and the entrance of the Cavalier from the mezzanine level of the ballroom. All of this Wahoo merriment was planned by the bride who is a Sweetbriar "V***n."
What FUN! These special, individualized wedding and reception moments really make our jobs fun and neve dull!

It is wedding weekend again! Today, we are delivering flowers to The Maine of Williamsburg and also providing designs and coordinating a church wedding with a reception at The John Marshall Ballrooms in downtown Richmond.

We really enjoy when clients have special floral design requests that allow us to be creative-- especially requests that are culturally or sentimentally significant, Mike and Jayesh needed traditional floral garlands for their ceremony last Saturday. In Indian culture, flower garlands, also known as mala, are a symbol of respect and love. In the wedding ceremony, the exchange represents the auspisciousness and union of the forthcoming nuptials. What we loved even more than having our design skills challenged was creating a Mala for the happy couple's beloved dog Cooper, who looked incredibly handsome for his dads' big day!

Happy 1st anniversary to one of our most amazing couples from 2023. Brittany and Ben are incredible people. We thoroughly enjoyed helping to plan, design, and coordinate their big (albeit rainy) day last year. We feel honored that they have kept in touch with us and are delighted to call them friends! We continue to wish them all the happiness they deserve!
The most fulfilling part of our business is building friendships with great people! We are so fortunate!

This past weekend, we had the absolute honor and pleasure of planning, designing, and coordinating wedding festivities for two wonderful souls, Mike and Jayesh.
The colors of the rainbow filled their Sangeet, Baraat, and wedding ceremonies. It was such a happy, joy-filled weekend!

This morning is too beautiful, and our view from the York River is too breathtaking not to be outside to create floral designs for tomorrow's wedding! We ensure an all-white color palette is never dull by using multiple varieties of white roses and other complementary flowers, such as Star Jasmine (from our garden) and ranunculus.

Our third wedding of the weekend (coordinating and floral designs) was for a delightful couple . Michele and Joey were an absolute joy to work with! What made this an especially unique wedding was that the groom's mother, Maria, was Rob's student the first year he taught (36 years ago)! We always enjoy and sometimes marvel at the connections with our couples, but this full-circle experience made our Sunday much more special! The wonderful vendors Michele and Joey assembled for their special day enhanced the day further! and provided flawless services (look at how amazing Michele still looked at the end of the fun-filled day). quenched thirsts, and satiated appetites (food was hearty and delicious). played tunes that kept the guests movin' on the dance floor and provided the photobooth capturing fun photos. We can't wait to see the extraordinary photographs captured by and video footage by !!

It's been a few weeks since we had two weddings on the same day, and on May 24, 2024, we had another set of two. Rob was at the beautiful John Marshall Ballrooms, and Joseph at the luxurious . For the Salamander wedding, we created classic and traditional floral centerpieces in a soft peach and pink color palette with a punch of color. The bride's bouquet featured fluffy white peonies, soft pastel-colored roses, and dainty fragrant stephanotis. The sunny blue skies canopied the outdoor ceremony on Salamander's terrace. Guests couldn't keep themselves from the dance floor as rocked the ballroom. After a bright sparkler exit, the couple ended the evening with a romantic carriage ride through Middleburg. We can't wait to see videography from and photos from .

Beautiful and energetic is an understatement! Yesterday's wedding started with a traditional ceremony at the historic .johnsucc, where 250 guests filled the sanctuary, and the altar was lined with 30 bridesmaids and groomsmen. After the nuptials, the celebration continued . kept the guests groovin' on the dance floor all night! and documented the beauty and energy of this amazing day!

Three weeks ago, we had the honor of creating a floral design for Gloucester's Historic Garden Week tour at the beautiful River Promise home. It is always fun when we get to (sort of) be our own clients!
The Garden Club of Virginia's Historic Garden Week began in 1927. It is a tremendous volunteer effort that boosts tourism and local economies. The proceeds from Historic Garden Week support preservation and educational programs throughout the commonwealth. Rob is a proud member of the Garden Club of Gloucester and Mathews.

May 4, 2024, meant two weddings for Riverwood Designs. Joseph had the privilege of coordinating Sydney and Brenden's wedding at Hope Church (along with Brittany from ) and Hermitage Country Club. Sydney wanted a cheerful flower palette that included her favorite flower, sunflowers. The couple wanted picnic-style fare, and the catering team delivered deliciousness! The spread included hand-pattied burgers, huge hot dogs, brats, homemade chips, chicken, salmon, watermelon and feta salad, cucumber and tomato salad, pasta salad, potato salad, and chocolate chip cookies. To work off all that food, the guests and couple danced nonstop for nearly three hours to the music from the energetic band ! We can't wait to see the professional photographs from the amazing !

Six years ago today, we created one of our first "big" wedding installations for a lovely couple. The lush floral design of hydrangeas and roses adorned the rustic backdrop of the wood doors and the vintage cane-back sofa. White flowers with a pop of pink blush are still classic wedding colors.

For today's "Best of 2023," we would like to wish Julia and Jake a very happy first anniversary. We had the distinct honor of designing florals for and then managing their 2/18/23 wedding. It was an elegant black tie event at the iconic John Marshall Ballrooms in downtown Richmond. Their gorgeous wedding was the perfect respite from the February doldrums!

We didn't let tropical storm Ophelia dampen Celeste and Mac's special day at the James RiverCountryClub. While the storm did her thing outside, guests filled the 1932 paneled ballroom for a extremely meaningful ceremony officiated by an Episcopal deacon who has known Mac since he was a child. . . . During cocktail hour and throughout the fun reception, we were reminded why weddings are important not only for the happy couple and their families but to their guests. We witnessed the groom's neighbor reconnect with a college buddy who is married to a friend of the bride. Neither of these men had any idea the other would be at the wedding! It was amazing to see them reconnect after more than 20 years. . . . Our favorite part of the wedding planning and floral design business is getting to know wonderful people. Unfortunately, after a wedding is over we rarely, if ever, see our clients. This weekend we had the distinct pleasure of working with a family for the third time! (The fourth time if you count the wedding of very close family friends last November) . . . We might be biased, but we think Blanton and Charlie's wedding weekend was about as RERFECT as they get. The weather was amazing (perhsps due to the seven bottles of bourbon that were buried) and everything went absolutely according to plan. What REALLY made it delightful for us was being surrounded by fun, warm, and loving friends! Congratulations and best wishes to Blanton and Charlie.
