This writing assignment for Kids VT and Seven Days has inspired me to start creating my own core values list. Read about the Flyin Ryan Hawks Foundation here:

"It's important to be a parent if you're going to build a kids' brand." —Claire Zhu

For the winter issue of Kids VT, I wrote about a new outerwear company, Hootie Hoo , that is calling kids outside. You can find the latest issue inside of this week's Seven Days.

When Xiaonan "Claire" Zhu started her own children's outerwear company last year — dubbed Hootie Hoo — she set out to create clothing that was...

Kellie Thomas is the latest subject for "Vermont Visionaries." Thomas is using her passion for Tae Kwon Do to help families and people of all ages and abilities come together to build their strength and confidence.
Family-style classes are the norm at TaeKwon Do K.I.C.K.S. That’s the way owner Kellie Thomas learned the Korean martial art when she was a child. Her experience was so positive, she brought it to her four schools in Middlebury, Vergennes, Orwell and Hinesburg. Her 280 students range in age from 18 months to 70-something.
Thomas takes inclusion beyond siblings, children, parents and grandparents. Not only does she encourage people of all ages to enroll, she recruits people whose lives vary widely. She works regularly with students who are nonverbal and those who live with Down syndrome, autism, epilepsy and ADHD.
Part of what she teaches her students is to give back. Every spring, she holds a ‘Kicking for a Cause’ fundraiser to raise money for local charities. And when her students test for their next belt rank she assigns the younger kids homework to perform ’10 random acts of kindness.'

Last summer I got to photograph Sarah and Matt’s microwedding at Lareau Farm Inn in Waitsfield, Vermont, where dogs comprised half of their guest list–seven human guests and five dogs to be exact. And on July 10th, I had the greatest pleasure of getting to continue capturing their wedding journey when their closest friends and family were finally able to gather together at Lareau Farm Inn ~ Home of American Flatbread for their first year anniversary party celebration. The silver lining of COVID-19 is that I got to hang out with this fantastic couple twice!

Mother of 27 children, Theresa Tomasi is this month’s feature for Vermont Visionaries. At 91, she broke through many adoption barriers adopting as a single person in the early 1960’s and in the decades that followed as an older parent. The kids grew up on 50 acres of land in Williston with horses, pigs, chickens and even peacocks. They took care of the animals and each other.

With Mother’s Day coming up on Sunday, let’s shine the spotlight on Williston resident Theresa Tomasi who is the mother of 27 children. At 91, she broke…

Today is the last day to pick up a copy of Seven Days and read the Kids VT April Vermont Visionaries feature on school nurse Kerry Farrell: "The pandemic has brought school nursing into the light so that the world can see what an important part of education we are.
