We spent the beginning of the season prepping all of the flower beds! First, we broad-forked and w**ded to get the soil ready for planting! After we planted, we fertilized all the beds! The last step of our bed prepping was installing stakes in the ground and laying netting on top of the beds. This ensures that the plants grow straight and tall! Can’t wait to see how these flowers turn out soon! 🌸 -Greta and Jordan

Phase one of a design and install of a demonstration cutting garden at Walther Gardens. Warm season annuals and bulbs will be added as the season progresses and before long it will be bursting with blooms. When Chris asked me to take on this project, I couldn’t say no. His enthusiasm is contagious and what he’s accomplished in the past few weeks is amazing. Come see it this weekend as the grand opening will showcase the new Walther Gardens that still pays respect to its history.

Hey guys, it’s Greta and Jordan! We’re the two seniors interning at Helen’s garden from May until early June! So far, we’ve spent a lot of time seeding and preparing beds for the spring season! Here are some pictures of some seedlings we’ve been working on! They’re popping up just in time for the warm weather! We’ve got some zinnia, celosia, and cosmos. We’re excited to get them into ground and continue to watch them bloom!🌱

Perfect day for planting! Beds were prepped yesterday, seedlings arrived from and .n.sell late afternoon, rain overnight and this morning, planted today under overcast skies and then another warm rain tonight. I couldn’t have written the script any better. If only it went this well all season- like in July!

Planning, planning and more planning. A successful growing season starts with making sure you have your ducks in a row; every row. Succession planting annuals ensures I have a constant supply, but it’s a bit of a puzzle. Ideally, once a crop is done, it’s terminated and something else is planted there as soon as possible. So I make a roadmap of what is supposed to happen in each bed during the entire year. It starts with what I want to have, then where is it coming from (a supplier like or or .n.sell; a local contract grower like ; or am I going to seed it myself) and finally where is everything going to go, which can be challenging because all my beds aren’t the same length. Then everything gets ordered and a seeding plan is developed, so I know exactly what gets seeded each week. Carefully thought out planning helps keep things running smoothly once the busy season gets underway and all those curveballs start coming at you. ⚾️

Like some of the earliest spring blooms, I thought I should pop my head up and get back to sharing life in Helen’s Garden.
People often ask “What do you do in the winter?” Plenty; but at a slower pace than when there are armloads of flowers and foliage to harvest, process and deliver. Can’t wait for those days to return. Until then, I’ll be sharing what’s been going on over the winter and take a glimpse at what’s to come. Here we go 2023!

I took a few days off to visit family and returned home last night to a cooler full of flowers - florist orders packed and ready to go out the door this morning. THANK YOU Jenna and Michelle for holding down the fort and letting me take a break. I’ve got the best team! We have a spot to join our team for the rest of the season. Message me if you’re interested or pass this along to someone you think might be. You can find these flowers and foliage and this week.

I never post enough pictures of the tulips while they’re in season, so before we move on to the other spring beauties, I thought I’d share a few of my favorites. Even when they are fading they are beautiful- the soft crinkling of petals, the shimmer that develops as they crisp and shatter! It almost looks like they’ve been painted…

Mt. Vernon is getting ready for ! Come join and I on Friday evening for a discussion about local flowers. I’ll be doing a seasonal floral demonstration after that. Lots of food, interesting vendors with flowers, seedlings (including ) and locally made products; and of course, lemons with peppermint sticks.

April 3, 2021 - swipe for today 2022. As growers, we are always trying to push the limits on growing earlier and later each season and when things don’t work out, you just have to say “I tried”. BUT, when you have a stretch like the past few days (with another to go), it’s gut wrenching. The field grown tulips and other spring bloomers that are just doing their thing can take a few cold nights. In fact April 3 & 4 last year we had nighttime temps in the upper 20’s but daytime was warmer. This cold snap of prolonged below freezing temps day and night are another story. I’ve covered what I can and now it’s a waiting game to see if there’s any permanent damage.🤞

Here’s a little sunshine for you on this chilly day. The Pantone color of the year in 2021 was a yellow called ‘Illuminating’. Here are some yellow beauties from the 2021 season, in the order in which they bloom. Can you name the type of each of these flowers? Extra points if you also know the varieties.

I’m not a big fan of social media. Oh, I love scrolling through pretty flower pictures and seeing what my farmer friends and florists are up to; but I get a knot in my stomach when I think about creating posts. I know, the more I do it the easier it will get and I have so much I would like to share with you. So, I’m going to try to give it a real go this year. An introduction seems like a good place to start. I’m Helen Campbell and I’m a small scale farmer/florist in Baltimore County. That means I grow cut flowers but also do some design work. I have been a lifelong gardener but launched Helen’s Garden six years ago and haven’t regretted a minute. I mainly focus on growing for florists and designers but also supply several retail outlets. You’ll find me at the BMI Farmers Market in Federal Hill May thru Oct and I love flowering people’s special events. Growing flowers and foliage, even on a small scale, isn’t for the faint of heart. The work is physical, hot (and sometimes cold - today I was out setting vole traps) and an emotional roller coaster. You can go from incredible pride after hearing a customer’s compliment to the sudden realization that a groundhog mowed down a stand of marigolds last night. I love the challenges of problem solving (constantly) as much as the reward of a constant parade of buckets being filled and sent out the door. I love the solitude of working out in the field as much as the engaging conversations at the market. I’m a glass half full kind of gal which helps get me through the less glamorous sides of being a grower.
On a personal note: I’m married, have two grown children and a lab named Cooper. My favorite color is orange and my favorite flower? That’s like asking me to name my favorite child! ranunculus, peony and tulips probably top the list, today. Thanks for following along and I look forward to showing you more of life on my little flower farm. Photo

Fall is here and the dahlias have been blooming their heads off. I harvest in the morning and by the afternoon they need cutting again. They were slow to get started this year, but now they are thrilled with the cool nights and warm days. Unfortunately, the inevitable frost will end the show. So, let’s enjoy them while we can.

Jenna’s last day! I might be the face of Helen’s Garden, but I couldn’t do it without my crew. This was Jenna’s 2nd Summer and I really appreciated that she could jump right in and w**d, harvest, process, make bouquets, wash buckets, plant,... She always takes the initiative to look for things to do and just does them. She’s very organized and is always straightening up, which helps keep me sane. Along with a great work ethic, she has a sense of humor and isn’t afraid to laugh at herself when something doesn’t go right. Thank you, Jenna for another great season and good luck in your Junior year!
