For Photographers:

"We give up so much of our personal lives in order to give someone back theirs."

I don't think this should be at the expensive of your entire personal life.

This is an interesting misquoted concept (I misquote Ben who quoted Gerry Gionis) that I learned about a few years ago and Ben Lau reminded me tonight.

Over the last few years, I had to really sure up boundaries in my business.

Set hours, take less work (which means charge more), and I don't think it was ever properly explained.

So let me give a little insight:

Think back to when you were 21. You probably went to parties, dates, family ext.

I was one of the youngest art directors in the city of chicago working over 70 hours a week.

Look at your 20s as a whole: probably spent weekends out, spending time with family, doing all the things 20 year olds did.

I was working every weekend as a photographer, most weekdays as a designer/consultant/like 12 other things, dealing with my sister passing away, and traveling to get to destinations as a photographer.

Think very specifically about 2021 - when you were most likely stuck in your house doing not much...

I was having brides/grooms call me freaking out everyday because thier wedding was either canceled or changed or moving. and I was covering EVERY wedding I could for people who didn't move, or friends who needed seconds. I shot over 100 weddings. It was MASSIVELY stressful.

So now - with all that in mind:

How much are those moments worth to you?

I don't have them. I can't even remember most of 2021 - like a vast majority of it is entirely a blur. To be honest, I remember very little about my 20s as a whole.

At a certain point - you might start thinking "I don't actually know how much time I have to make these memories..."

What I'm writing all this for is this: start making those boundaries earlier.

You don't need to answer texts immediately.

It's okay to have time off, its okay to set hours and stick to them. It's okay to charge enough to do what you do without having to do it 24/7 to make ends meat.

If you don't: You'll burn out, your health might dip, and eventually you'll forget so much that other people have to remind you where you were.

More importantly, you can't put other people over yourself 100% of the time without losing 100% of your sanity.

People that like what you do will pay you enough to do it at a level that is comfortable.

People that don't want you to be at your best shouldn't be clients, friends, or family and it is also okay to tell them to take a hike (politely or not depending on who they are).

Why can't you have photos that feel like a different era?

I've always wanted to create images with props and looks from the 20s-40s. Personally I just find it to be one of the times in US history where there was a lot more character to everything from design to buildings.

Granted, a lot of those buildings didn't have proper fire protection and are gone... But that doesn't mean they didn't look good!

This building was built in 2018 though, I just like it a lot.

What if I told you, that you in fact could get married at president Snows house from the movies?

Well now you know.

About the house:

"Edward Inman "Swan" House is a mansion in Atlanta, Georgia. It was designed by Philip T. Shutze and built in 1928 for Edward and Emily Inman. The house is currently part of the Atlanta History Center, and it has been featured in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2." From

I was like - Alright lady, I don't know you but I guess its fine.

Most of this was made up.

YOU should do an engagement, elopement or couples session at a lighthouse.

Here's why:

The rental fee is usually not absurd because it's a historical society and as long as you're not doing anything stupid.. they may not even charge anything beyond the entry fee.

Lighthouses have unique staircases that create a lot of really amazing imagery.

You'll get a bird's eye view of a beach.

And last but not least this is the most important one:

I really want to shoot one.

Florida has many lighthouses available but this one in particular is the Ponce inlet lighthouse which happens to be next to it incredible Beach.

St Augustine has one as well.

Is a hot dog a sandwich or a taco?

The answer: it doesn't matter, hot dogs are gross like Instagram captions.

You know what's not gross?

These photos.

There's a Boat, treehouse, castle, and a trampoline - plus I'm fairly certain Kristina & Ray work for Vogue or something.

Do people still read magazines or have they changed to a attention span friendly pop-up format?

I'm kidding, no one reads magazines... BUT if they did, you'd find these models in it probably.

I bet you didn't think I'd be able to connect these caption shenanigans back to this engagement session. Even I didn't know where I was going with this caption.

Matter of fact... Caption over. Done. Gone. Fin. The end.

Also: congratulations Kristina & Ray.

I'm sure I could have used a high to write a better description. But maybe my poor description is possibly more human?

Just kidding I wrote this entire thing with AI.

Haven't seen these photos over 3 years.

Most of these were taken while flying in a smaller Cessna with the doors off, mostly hanging out of the door holding the chain where the door was supposed to be.

I might be a little crazy 🤷🏻

There's more than one stop here...

Sedona, Page Arizona (horseshoe Bend), and lake Powell.

You tell me, was it worth it?

Our Story

Hey! My name is Roy Serafin, and I’d love to photograph your adventures. Photography and videography are now the two largest parts of my life, and I am extremely grateful that I can use them both to capture the most important moments of my clients lives. Here’s a little about me, I started out as a designer working at some of the largest agencies in the US for brands like Bose and Kraft. From the agencies and local communities I learned street and travel photography eventually adding video into the mix. About three years ago I decided that my talents were better used capturing moments for people in love, anywhere they wanted that to happen. I focus on couples, mainly small and intimate adventure weddings and elopements while taking on a few traditional weddings each year. I cannot express how honored I feel being asked to be a part of the weddings and elopements I do, there is literally nothing I love doing more!

Some other things that I love: pizza, hiking, Instagram, Arizona, adventure, design, film, cheesecake, and exploring abandoned things (sorry mom!). Feel free to mention any of the aforementioned items, and we might have an extremely long conversation neither of us planned for.
