Hi there!
(2)

Thank you for taking the time to explore Picabash page, I’m really glad you’re here. I created Picabash website because as a busy working mother I found it hard to find time to research unique places or activities for my children’s birthday parties. I wanted to create fun and memorable experiences for my two boys but didn’t enjoy having to spend hours looking through search results or calling arou

nd to different businesses to find the one that could meet my needs. I knew there had to be others like me who had the same challenges and believed there could be a simpler way to discover local businesses. I also had the desire to showcase small businesses who may not always show up in your typical online search. So, I created Picabash with the goal of streamlining the event planning process and making the small local business, the easy and convenient choice for your next event. From birthday parties to graduations, baby showers or weddings, I hope you’ll find our website helpful in planning all of the special events in your life.

This is the hardest post that I had to write. Picabash is an event marketplace with a social impact. I'm working to create a supportive, local small business ecosystem to elevate women & people-of-color (POC) owned businesses in the event space. Inviting everyone to hire these businesses for your next event. Picabash is a brand, it is a community.

When one thinks of events, the first reaction would be to think of happy, merry occasions. My race is a part of my identity. I cannot change that nor I can separate lived experiences that are impacting me, my business & my community.

When the pandemic hit, it brought on an increased level of racial discrimination against Asian & Pacific Islanders (API). Despite financial & social challenges, this group is battling both the pandemic & racial inequality. 18% of doctors & 8.5% of nurses in the U.S. are of API descent & we make up a little over 5% of the U.S. population.

Between Mar-Dec 2020, there were 2,800+ reported hate crimes & violence acts against the API community across 47 states. Why haven't you heard about this before?

As children, APIs were taught to respect their elders, be mindful of others & not to "rock the boat". As adults, we continue to be silent & fear of taking up space when discussing racism because we don't want to diminish other minority groups' experiences. Comparing who had it worse doesn't further anti-racism either. Our cultural upbringing prevents us from speaking up & making our voices heard.

These violence & hate crimes have targeted children, women & elderly. Why? Because these groups are the least likely to report what happened. From verbal harassment in schools, private businesses & microaggressions in public places. These incidents have left the API communities traumatized. Many APIs are suffering alone, feeling invisible.

Anti-racism work needs to include ALL of the races to come together & work together.

Right now, the API community needs our allies to stand with us. The threat we feel is real & urgent. We must frame racial justice to include ALL people.

Please check in on your API friends, neighbors, colleagues & network. Ask them how they are really doing at this time. Support API businesses.

Let's show up with empathy, compassion and be an active ally.

"Throw Kindness around like Confetti." That's the motto of Leonetti Confetti. Kylee Leonetti, a confetti-obsessed photographer, wife/mom & filmmaker living in Minneapolis, MN who has loved helping others + making confetti for as long as she can remember 🎉

Inspired by her own & close family member’s experiences with addiction, she started this company with the goal of making the world a brighter place with confetti. Leonetti Confetti partnered with Wayside Recovery Center in 2018 to do exactly that, and now?! She gets to hire women in recovery to make colorful confetti for all of life’s celebratory occasions!

Big brands and small businesses and everyone in between can share in the celebration as they break the stigma around addiction with colorful, photogenic confetti.

For your next celebration, don't forget to add confetti. It's fun and you will be supporting a great cause.

During Women's History Month, I'll be highlighting many of our local women entrepreneurs in the event space. If you have any suggestions, please comment below.

I met Amalia-Latin Gourmet with a Cultural Flair in 2018 at a corporate event where she was the speaker. In that event, Amalia shared how she started her business as a gourmet caterer and inspirational speaker, spreading her Guatemalan culture. Amalia brings in a Latin flare into her dishes and let me tell you, her food is delicious!

She loves sharing her Guatemalan roots and Latin heritage using gourmet cuisine as a platform to educate about cultural nuances and develop a broader understanding and appreciation of Latin culture. You can also find Amalia on Twin Cities Live alongside Elizabeth Ries and Steve Patterson on KSTP TV5 ABC.

What I love most about Amalia is her strategic mindset, bravery and generosity. Amalia is the founder of Women Entrepreneurs of Minnesota | WeMN.org, a local non-profit that provides a supportive and welcoming community where women solopreneuers and business owners can connect, share, develop and grow. If you are a woman entrepreneur looking for a community of like mind, I recommend joining it.

Hello Picabash community!

Happy Women's History Month & today happened to be my birthday 😊. My name is Astrid. I'm originally from Indonesia. I'm a diversity, equity & inclusion (DEI) practitioner by day & Picabash is my passion project. I created this community to elevate women & people-of-color (POC) owned businesses in the event space. In turn, creating a supportive, local small business ecosystem.

Why the event space? I have two kids & my oldest is very creative. During his younger years, I had a hard time finding vendors for his birthday parties. Picabash serves as a connector between event vendors & the community, making that discovery happen faster.

When I started working for corporate America, I was introduced to the concept of diversity and inclusion. Growing up, my family experienced our shares of discrimination. My childhood experiences fuel the passion inside me to root for the underdog, the underserved & those who don't have a voice. That is how I found my purpose in this world, as a DEI practitioner. I want to educate, bring awareness & power everyone’s potential.

I'm also using this platform as a way to educate and bring awareness around social issues in our community. You might have heard recent news all over social media & news publications on the recent spike in anti-Asian violence taking place across the U.S. especially in large urban centers like LA & NY. Many of the victims are elders and women. If you are not aware of any of these, that is what I called privilege. Privilege of not having to experience it.

Many Asians began experiencing Covid-related racism fueled by xenophobia, as well as the tone from the top. I'm sharing this to ask you to join me in coming together to create safe spaces for all. Here are some tangible actions we can all take.

❤ Learn. Read about the history of Model Minority and learn more about systemic racism.

❤ Volunteer and support nonprofits that help dismantle systemic racism or educate about Asian American culture.

❤ Amplify Asian voices.

❤ Silence is violence, so speak up.

Together, we can create safe spaces for all.

Elevated Style Events is a wedding planning service specializes in multicultural weddings. Sese is the lead planner behind the service. From full service event planning, wedding coordination, to design and decor only services, she got you covered.

Which Black owned businesses are you supporting and/or following? To be honest, I'm not aware of many black-owned businesses and I know I'm missing out. Please share some of your favorite Black-owned businesses below. That's the purpose of this community - to create a supportive, local events community.

I recently found out about Sugarspoon Desserts and I love her sweet creations! In addition to premium custom cakes and desserts, Sugar Spoon Desserts also does balloon and backdrop service. Altreisha Foster, pictured here, is the creative talent behind Sugar Spoon Desserts. ❤

What better way to start a work week other than sharing joyful news? I want to congratulate our friend, Nicole Fenstad Princess Party Pals for winning the 2021 Readers Choice Awards for Best of the Best in Children’s Entertainment!

This pandemic hit many industries hard. Small businesses in the event industry are also hit hard, especially those who operate as a solopreneur since they aren't eligible for the PPP. What is truly inspiring is hearing all sort of creative ways how these businesses are pivoting during this time. That is a testament to resiliency and passion. ❤

Princess Party Pals focuses on educating our young minds through fun story telling opportunities. During the pandemic, Nicole pivoted and offered a FaceTime, virtual story time, in-person socially distant party, outdoor event, and more.

💡 If you are a small business owner, how have you pivoted your business?

💡 To our followers and supporters, what are some of the small businesses that you supported and admired? Share it with us so we can continue to support the small business ecosystem.

I was browsing some old pictures and came across this tea party that I hosted a couple of years ago. After 11 months of deprived social interaction and most likely the winter blues, I'm starting to dream about ways I'm going to celebrate when we are able to do so again safely.

Lights definitely add to a celebration and make an event feels more magical. Alpha Lit Twin Cities has great selection of marquee signs and you can even customize the bulb colors.

Exploring something new with your significant other is fun and exciting. Over time, all of those shared experiences make your bond/relationship stronger.

These lovelies got to experience making their own scented candles at Olfactory Scent Studio.

🧒 His version was a mix of bamboo, razor and olive blossoms creating a sophisticated musk with wood undertone scent.

👩 Her version was a mix of awapuhi, champagne and goji berry that produced a balance of fresh and sparkling scent.

What's your favorite scent?

Our Story

Meet our Founder, Astrid Hi there! Thank you for taking the time to explore Picabash, I’m really glad you’re here. I created Picabash because as a busy working mother I found it hard to find time to research unique places or activities for my kids’ birthday parties. I wanted to create fun and memorable experiences for my kids but I didn’t enjoy having to spend hours looking through search results or calling around to different businesses to find the one that could meet my needs. I knew there had to be others like me who had the same challenges and believed there could be a simpler way to discover local businesses that have unique offerings.

Picabash is an event marketplace with a social impact. We are dedicated to streamlining the event planning process by connecting consumers with local women and BIPOC-owned (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) businesses that provide unique venues, products or services. We expedite the discovery phase for small businesses and make it easy to search for and discover the people, places and things that make our local area vibrant and unique. Picabash is similar to Angies list however, it focuses on partnering with businesses owned by women and people-of-color. Picabash enables individuals to create memorable experiences while supporting the local, small business community.

Picabash’s goal is to streamline the event planning process by making the small local businesses available in one site. From birthday parties to graduations, weddings to baby showers, corporate events to social time with your friends, I hope you’ll find our website helpful in planning all of the special events in your life.
