BE PRESENT.

This concept applies to life in general. I want to advise all clients, especially wedding clients, that it is vitally important that you "be present" for your wedding. Now what does that exactly mean? Of course they're going to be present dummy..they're getting married there. No, I mean your guests are expecting you to mingle, dance with them on your dance floor, and socialize IN the reception hall/area. At a couple recent weddings I dj'd and these were both very young couples, apart from their first dance I noticed that the groom never once danced out on their dance floor nor was he even in the reception area after dinner..almost never. And at both, the bride rarely danced with her guests...one where she never stepped foot on the dance floor except for her first dance, dance with her father and bouquet toss. Both bride and groom were outside of the reception area nearly the entire time taking pictures with guests or smoking - not sure what - but they weren't there. So what do you think happened as a result? Their guests left early of course. Subconsciously, they're thinking well if the bride and groom are not even here, why should I stay? And at both weddings, people left early..significantly early. So if you want your wedding to be a huge success and go strong until the end, you have to participate and that means simply BE PRESENT. The dj can't force people to stay. We can play great dance music and keep the vibe going but if the people that your guests are helping celebrating their big day aren't there, it's kind of an insult (also why I don't recommend a planned or unplanned early bride/groom departure..they should stay until the end of music/last song is played). They've brought gifts, some have driven or flown a LONG way to be there, they've spent time and money to purchase that perfect suit or dress for your wedding. Now I understand when a reception is held outdoors with the heat it's exhausting to be on the dance floor constantly - and you don't have to be - just BE PRESENT - but when you're not even in the reception room/area, you shouldn't be surprised when guests leave early. You could say..well that's what they wanted to do, let them be...well sure but you see not being present has consequences. Just my observation and I want your wedding to be a big hit. A dj can't perform magic and jedi mind tricks to make your guests stay and ignore the fact that the bride and groom are missing. It's important therefore that you BE PRESENT.

Wedding coordinator? Should we hire one or not?

I would never tell anyone to not hire a wedding coordinator however your dj, if they are a true professional, should actually be doing much of the coordinating revolving around the entertainment and timeline of your wedding ceremony and reception. Because the dj needs to precisely time introductions, announcements, ceremony processionals, games/special moments, and dances/music, a wedding coordinator often can be a hinderance and mess up the timing of these very important moments - I've experienced it first-hand myself so I'd urge clients to let your dj handle those special times and have your coordinator (if you hire one) handle the non-entertainment aspects of your wedding day. If you have many intricate details planned out for your wedding day that you don't wish to stress over or have to deal with, then a wedding coordinator can certainly add value and take the stress off the wedding couple, however my experience has been that most couples don't hire one simply because they like a bit low-key, simpler wedding day and expect the dj (as they should) to do what he needs to do to connect all the dots and make it go smoothly. Not slamming wedding coordinators at all - but some think they need to direct the dj's every move and that is just not ever going to go well. Whatever your decision, I hope what I've shared will be of value to you.

Trust your dj! (first in a series of articles I will write)

He/she has many years of experience (if you chose wisely) and knows best practices and what works and what doesn't. Too often clients feel they need to micro-manage every detail of their event. Give your dj guidance on your wants and needs but also listen to their recommendations and cautionary advice. After all, you want your event to be fun for all and everything to go smoothly right? Relax and enjoy your party/celebration!
