“Each of us brings something alive in the world that no one else can. There is a profound necessity at the heart of individuality. When your life awakens and you begin to sense the destiny that brought you here, you endeavor to live a life that is generous and worthy of the blessing and invitation that is always calling you.”

Unity Ceremony of the week: The Handwashing Ceremony.

The ritual of handwashing has been known to cultures around the globe for thousands of years, and with good reason. Water “cleansed” long before anyone considered the benefits of hygiene. And for humans our hands represent the give and take, the fist and the open palm of love. Little defines us as humans like our hands, so it’s no wonder the ritual remains largely unchanged.

The metaphors around the ritual of handwashing are boundless. A Handwashing Ceremony is a new beginning, a fresh start on a new path together, clean. For couples getting married a handwashing is a beautifully touching way to begin the wedding.

For couples wishing to renew their vows a Handwashing Ceremony is all the more poignant, for what good marriage couldn’t use a little forgiveness now and then?

The Cacapon River means “medicine” or “healing waters” in the Shawnee language. At the Appalachian Wedding Chapel, we’re in the habit of asking the river first before taking any water for this ceremony, and it is something we encourage our couples to do if they are bringing water from another source. Jenni and Josh in these pictures brought water from the Smoky Mountains.

At the appointed time in the ceremony, the celebrant gives a short invocation (probably using a few of those metaphors we mentioned) then invites the couple to take turns pouring water over and washing each other’s hands.

We carry beautiful, locally crafted pitchers and basins in our boutique – so locally crafted in fact, even the clay comes from Hampshire County! For something truly unique, we’ll even personalize your handwashing pitcher with your names and the date of your wedding

Unity Ceremony of the Day: The Wedding Vase.

The symbolism of the two spouts of the wedding vase could not be more clear; two individuals coming together to form the vessel that is marriage.

The Hopi and Pueblo Nations use ceremonial wedding vases like the one pictured. The two spouts represent two people, now coming together – still as individuals, but sharing one life. The looped handle represents the unity achieved in marriage, and the space created within represents the circle of life. The vessel represents the sharing of a common life.

There is also what fills the vase to be considered, but not just wine, or other beverage; the very act of filling the vessel represents what each individual brings to the marriage - the sweet and strong, the pure, beautiful and life sustaining.

According to navajocodetalkers.org, the wedding vase is more than a ceremonial item. It is an essential component of the wedding ceremony itself. Its use works to preserve the sanctity of the marriage contract being formed between two people. Filled with “holy water” that might include nectar, tea or purified water, each spouse takes a turn offering a drink and drinking from the vase.

Once the ceremony is over, the wedding vase becomes a representation of the couple’s foundational love together. It becomes a cherished item in the home, with both parties responsible for taking care of it.

The wedding vase pictured is of a design created exclusively for the Appalachian Wedding Chapel by the enormously talented WV potter, Julie Farrar. We're very proud of all the local ceremonial pottery, handfasting cords and other hand-crafted items we carry in our Boutique.
