I missed a wedding yesterday… after over 500 of these things it was a first I had told myself would never happen. There’s a bright side though and a long list of people I have to thank for their grace and professionalism and support while I rolled around in agony.

I was a little kid the first time I saw a wedding photographer work. It was my sister’s wedding and was holding the camera. Watching him change film, adjust to the light, meander through moments choosing the right one to raise his camera to his eye left an immediate impression. I was 15 when I took a job working for My job was to organize his slides for stock photo sales and occasionally hold a light on a job. I was horrible at both. My first paid wedding made me $800 and I spent $700 on new gear to be there. The first time I spoke at a conference there were 7 people in the room. My first large opportunity to speak for was at and due to a scheduling issue not a single person showed up. My first digital camera sits next to my first film camera on the wall in my office. My first award was at a county fair in New Mexico for a photo of a sunset. I’ve spent 24 years with a camera in my hands and I’m just now starting to see myself as an artist. The world would have you believe that successful people never mess up but I can assure you every win I’ve ever had in this job was built on the lessons of ten mistakes.

Flip through about half of the most recent edition of Arkansas Bride magazine and you’ll land in Cabo sipping margaritas while the sun sets from the most pristine view in all of Mexico. It’s the perfect escape from the weird grey endless winter outside.

Wedding photography is what photographers do when they’ve run out of good ideas or couldn’t make is as real artists.

Why would you waste your life trying to be an artist when you could get a real job and just take pictures as a hobby?

You’re way too smart to be a starving artist when you’re older.

Who is going to want to marry a wedding photographer? You’d be a horrible dad and husband being gone every weekend.

And other encouragement I was told early on as a photographer. 😅 These days it seems like we’ve finally worked through a lot of the negativity towards young artists but the truth is the way forward is in encouraging inspiration over aspiration. Success should be a biproduct of a beautifully refined artistic process and clients who are a big part of that process. Let’s take time in 2025 to encourage the up and comers, high five the rule breakers, and follow the game changers. Tag a photographer you think the world should follow.

We regret to inform you that all celebrations in Texas are on hold until people can properly recover from this last weekend. If you’ve never been to a wedding where the couple toasts with fireball out of martini glasses, where the groom jumps on stage at ten pm and starts tossing Arby’s sandwiches into the crowd, where a helicopter is waiting at the end of the sparkler exit to surprise the bride with a getaway, or where the groom screams “we have the meat” at sunset walking down rows of vineyards with all of west Texas behind him… it’s going to have to wait.
