We went to the Memorial Day service at Shearer Cemetery on Sunday. It's Americana at its best. Flags at every service man's stone, a long row of kids took peonies to those graves, the Gettysburg address read, the story of two brothers buried there who both served in WW II, kids singing, neighbors visiting, loved ones remembered.
The stone had just been set for Heather, our daughter-in-law who passed away Oct 15, 2023. It honors her well. Good decision by our son, Seth! I filled the container with white flowers, and the Seth and Heather's kids each picked out a memorial box of flowers to honor their mom with.
We all miss her energy, spiritual input, and can-do mode of operation. They miss the nurturing that a mother gives.
The children are amazing. They do not complain or feel sorry for themselves outwardly. They seem to be doing just what Seth said they would do at Heather's celebrations of life. He said, "We are not going to just survive, we are going to thrive." That is a statement of faith that God has helped them honor.
Living in the moment...with some sad moments in their busy lives, they choose not to have a victim mentality.
Here are some pics of Seth and the kids and the flowers. Notice the angel wings to the right. We like to imagine Heather in the presence of angel wings... along with those who have gone before. In a world unimaginable to us... with joy inexpressable and full of glory. And the Love and Light of Jesus, of course!

So thankful for a nice rain... Elizabeth Stimson
and I worked at planting flowers in the ground on Saturday night....with lights on to see what we were doing. There was rain coming, and there's nothing like a deadline to get a person motivated.
These pictures were taken this morning, with droplets still on the plants and blooms. I couldn't wait !to take them with better lighting.
So the addition of gardening to running a greenhouse has begun. Gardening is harder on the body...getting up and down...but the results of those labors are months of beauty each time you walk up to the door of your house.
This week is a God-given perfect week to buy flowers and get them in your pots and flower beds. Cool weather is such a great way to give them a gentle transition.
There are plenty of petunia, geraniums, vinca, lobelia, verbena and lantana....among plenty of others...to choose from.
Come on out this week.
I will have some Memorial planters ready for you, too.

Here's one that defied the odds! Black shirt... colorful boxes of flowers! She said that she decided to get out of the box.
Although did you know there are black flowers!?
And she got some. More left, if you want to come and check them out!!

This lady from Corning came with a bright and vibrantly colorful shirt. She left with a whole rainbow of brightly colored, vibrant flowers. You can hardly tell where the shirt ends and the flowers begin. It's just plain good to brighten up your world!!

ALWAYS fun to see these flower lovers drive in. They thought someone might have to sit on someone's lap to make room for the boxes of flowers... but expert packing fit the beauty in. Enjoy ladies!

There's just something about a farmer stopping by on his way to plant in the next field to get flowers for Mother's Day that has to make you smile.

In addition to that, his mom came later to get some flowers, and I told her he had gotten some and left them up in the shade to pick up when he comes back by. She offered to take them for him. I wonder if she is getting one of those hanging baskets today?
Top that off with her husband coming by later and getting some favorite purple flowers.

This is just stuff that isn't experienced on the concrete parking lots in cities and towns. Haha.

DON'T FORGET!
Among graduations, dance recitals, ballgames, track meets, award ceremonies and everything else thrown into May....
IT'S MOTHERS DAY THIS WEEKEND.

None of these events and happenings could happen without mothers....right?

If your mom's love language is quality time spent together AND she loves flowers....you've got a great opportunity here at Painted Earth Flowers.

As well as picking out flowers and containers....you can bring your own pot and plant it up here. I'll have the soil and some additives that help your potted flowers be happy for month's to come.

This time of year, working in the dirt and flowers, I am taken back to my Gma McKinley who worked in her flower gardens into her nineties. She would sit on a stool and bend over to reach the flowers and the dirt. I think of my Aunt Dale McKinley who was an all around pro at teaching, giving to others, housekeeping, entertaining and gardening. She did everything well! And, my mom, Mary McKinley, an angel here on earth. She came from hot and dry central Kansas. Southwest Iowa offered her a better chance at flower gardening. She had flowers as long as I remember, and I was always jealous at how orderly and well kept her flower gardens were. She even planted flowers with my sister the day she suddenly was released to a world where I bet the flowers that we are 'wowed' by here are just a hint of the glory that is to come.

I have such a wonderful heritage of flower lovers. Many of my McKinley cousins are nature lovers and flower garden tenders.
It's a great 'hobby'...and though you have to spend money, the therapy is comparatively cheap. And it's possible we all spend more money on other hobbies than on flower gardening. (Like eating out? Haha)
