🌙❄️ Celebrate Winter Solstice with The Hybrid! ❄️🌙

This weekend, we’ve got TWO incredible events lined up at Hybrid Gallery to mark the season:

✨ Winter Solstice Night Market – Join us at the Winter Solstice Night Market for a celebration of light on the eve of the darkest day of the year. Space Dirt Dyes has gathered some of their favorite Eugene makers for you to shop locally made gifts from apparel, ceramics, body care, jewelry, crystals and more. Enjoy live music from Elijah Simonfy & Paul Carberry as they play smooth jazz throughout the evening. Feast your eyes on live painting from local artists Paisley Mae & Parker Wells. There will also be craft workshops held by Earth Mama Domestics for you to create your own holiday decor & gifts for a small fee! Event is free. Family friendly. Snacks, sweet treats and libations will be available for purchase.

🖼️ Broken Open Hearts Club Art Show Opening – Three painters (Mikalina Kirkpatrick, Gloria Udosenata, and Jenn Vincent) who explore the dynamics of interconnectedness, life and death processes, and the sacred wounds that open our hearts to the mysteries of life offer their work in constellations of relationship for the winter Solstice. Please join the artists for music, light refreshments, and viewing of boldly colorful artworks in a warm, lively, all-ages environment.

Join us this week and celebrate the return of the light with creativity, community, and connection!

This Week at The Hybrid Gallery

Alder Street + Mr. Vale's Math Class
Friday December 13th - 8:30pm

This Friday, December 13th The Hybrid Gallery proudly presents Alder Street and Mr. Vale's Math Class (Portland)

Alder Street
Hometown: Eugene, OR

Genres: Bluegrass / Rock / Alt Country Rock

Members: Ian Royer- Guitar, Chris Kelley- Banjo, Aaron Nelson- Bass, Jake Beckwith- Fiddle, Jesse Lawton- Mandolin, Emily West- Drums

Alder Street is boot-stompin’, gritty, and bourbon flavored. The band draws its inspiration from a variety of sources, evinced by original tunes that break the mold of traditional bluegrass, and reprises ranging from Iron Maiden to Bill Monroe.

The band first formed for a benefit show from a hodgepodge of musicians living in Eugene’s infamous Campbell Club Cooperative on Alder Street.Over the years Alder Street blossomed in Eugene's infamous local music scene.

Alder Street's latest album, Americannibal, was relased in May 2014 at Seattle Folklife. It has been described as "a tight, polished study on the frontiers of contemporary bluegrass" - Eugene Weekly

Alder Street's line-up consists of Chris Kelley (banjo), Jesse Lawton (mandolin), Aaron Nelson, (bass), Ian Royer (guitar), Emily West (drums) and Jake Beckwith (fiddle).

Mr. Vale's Math Class

You may or may not learn anything with Mr. Vale's Math Class but you're guaranteed to have a good time. This six piece funk band has horns that knock down the door and percussion-laden grooves that are the perfect accompaniment to any dance party. While you're at it, come grab some pots and pans & join in.

Alongside Jordan Vale on keys, trumpet and vocals, Mr. Vale’s Math Class includes musicians Nick Hamel on guitar, Patrick Golichnik on bass, James Ford on drums, Miette LaPierre on vocals, JD Erickson on saxophone along with a rotating cast of dynamic guest musicians.

Mr. Vale's Math Class seeks to evoke curiosity and create moments of play. Through our songwriting we explore anxiety and complex emotions, hoping to normalize the absurdity of being human and invite listeners to move their bodies, laugh, shout, and take life a little less seriously.

Our songs may bring a listener back to their formative school days and the emotions they experienced as they learned about math and maybe felt overwhelmed by the demand for right answers. Revisiting these familiar concepts, we introduce play in hopes to spark fresh curiosity and self-compassion.

Forest Mountain Lion + Cassie Candles & the Sandals Vandals + Lazarus Pearl

Saturday, December 14th - 8pm

Forest Mountain Lion

Forest Mountain Lion brings an intimate but powerful folk rock experience. Listeners are immersed in an original musical style. Lyrical stories blend themes of love, longing and friendship with messages of spiritual empowerment and the vision and strength to create a better world.

Forest seeks to support local resilience movements that bring people together and spiritually redefine what we are as part of a larger whole. After years playing music in Los Angeles, where he received accolades from the LA Times for his orchestral rock project The Struggle Is Not Real, Forest traded a studio full of gadgets for an acoustic guitar and an elk skin drum so he could play music outdoors. He has a degree in orchestral composition from the University of Oregon and has recorded many albums, available on all streaming platforms. He is joined by some incredible local musicians: Annemarie (Anumi) Hoffman on violin, Jacob Sellars on bass, Courtney Wade on harmony vocals, and Connor Dean on drums.

Cassie Candles & the Sandals Vandals

Cassie Candles is a q***r dreampop artist based in Eugene. She writes through her life experiences navigating romance and attachment, and leaving home, among other topics. After years producing in the isolation of her bedroom, she's breaking into the local music scene alongside her feral band of Sandal Vandals, with bassist David Davis, violinist Leda Glastonbury, and drummer Ogma Witting-Seanchai. Together, they channel magical, danceable dreampop.

Lazarus Pearl

Lazarus Pearl is a Eugene-based songwriter and drag king. After years of being a solo performer, they are now joined by Rena Frampton on drums and Peejay Racho on bass. Together they make hooky indie-punk songs that draw influence from folk and new wave. Pearl's lyrics range in topics from religious ecstasy and q***rness to the surveillance state. Lazarus Pearl wants to make you dance and rage.

Holiday H***y Tonk Hoedown

Sunday, December 15th - 730pm

The Hybrid Gallery & Bigfoot A&E proudly present Nashville guitar legend Porter McClister's Box & Bucket Band and special guest Stephen Arriola & The Willin' Three for a very special Holiday H***y Tonk Hoedown and "fill the van" food drive for Waste To Taste.

And that is why Porter McClister is a solidified legend, and influential figure in the lore of Nashville guitar pickers.

Barbara LePine on washtub bass is a drummer out of L.A. who was a member of international touring act, “The California Girls," an all female opening act for The Beach Boys, as well as Steppenwolf, Al Jardine and the Beach Party Band, to name a few. Longtime drummer for the notorious Pasadena CA band, Snotty Scotty and the Hankies. Vibraphonist with the Lincoln Pops Big Band, + percussionist in pit orchestras for Broadway style musical stage shows.

Bucket is amplified just like a regular bass guitar, however, the tone is much lower than a typical bass. A stand-up bass is a "double bass," however, Barbara's one string washtub bass is considered a "triple-bass" in tone, with a unique sound all it's own. Barbara feels the washtub is one of the most difficult instruments to master, (and to sing with!) considering it is played on one string, on a sliding scale. Bucket has become Barbara's favorite instrument to play!

Minor Mirage:

A quintet of seasoned multi-instrumentalists and accomplished songwriters from Eugene, Minor
Mirage explores the dark, heavy and mysterious soundscape of an exotic Western film that doesn't exist. Their debut EP, Gray Area, sets the scenes, directing a medley of moods and movement -- from the music of a ghost-town cocktail lounge to a hopeless dirge of the dusty trail.

Band members
Brandon Olszewski (ole-chef-ski) = trumpet and pedal steel
Joe Davey = electric guitar
John Shields = guitars and piano/keys
Steven Weeks = bass
Nick Cervantes = drums and percussion

Filthy Rich & The Gold Diggers:

Filthy Rich and The Gold Diggers (FRGD) is an incarnate of the days of jams and live music at Tracktown Records in the Whiteaker. Their songs, written as artful and imaginative suites are reminiscent of Pink Floyd, with soaring Portishead-esque vocals by none other than Eugene’s folk royalty Baroque Betty, Jesse Ferreira of Medium Troy, and Joe X. Jiang of The Slants. The band had been on a long hiatus for a number of years, but is now ready to step out onto Eugene’s stages and share their music once more.

ianto

Driven by pulsating rhythms and adorned with rich, emotive vocals, ianto intertwines latino melodies with heavier guitar riffs and dynamic song structures. Weaving together the finest elements of traditional Ranchero music, rockabilly, and ska, ianto is distinctly original and captivating.

Baroque Betty String Quartet:

Betty is a self taught vocalist and seasoned performance artist hailing from Kalispell, Montana and writes the entirety of her song repertoire. Daughter of Montana’s Poet Laureate 2017-2018, Lowell Jaeger, she is naturally groomed to be the captivating vocalist and songwriter she has become. Her own lyrics are replete with animal and nature imagery, but it’s a fairy tale more in the fashion of Grimm than Disney, with minimalistic guitar styling and soaring string-laden melodies to accompany them. She also graces stages across the Pacific Northwest as a burlesque performer, and produces The Wax Poetry R***e burlesque and variety show.

Quartet members are:
Julia Frantz - Violin
Corwin Bolt - Upright Bass
Alex Abrams - Cello

Eric Alterman:

Born in New York City, Eric Alterman has at times been a cellist, a guitarist, a traveler, a composer, and a songwriter. His songwriting project, begun in 2023, explores themes of love, loss, transformation, and existence, through poetic imagery and storytelling. He lives in Portland, OR.

Tony Furtado Quintet
Friday November 29th 7:30pm

Tony Furtado (banjos, guitars, lead vocals), Luke Price (fiddle), Simon Chrisman (hammer dulcimer), Todd Sickafoose (bass) and Tristan Clarridge (cello).

Tony Furtado is an evocative and soulful singer, a wide-ranging songwriter and a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist adept on banjo, cello-banjo, slide guitar and baritone ukulele who mixes and matches sounds and styles with the flair of a master chef (he’s also an accomplished sculptor, but that’s another story). All of the music of America is in Tony’s music. Relix hit the nail on the head when writing of Tony: “True talent doesn’t need categories."

In 1990, Tony signed a recording deal with Rounder Records. Beginning with Swamped in 1990, he recorded six critically acclaimed albums for the label, collaborating with such master musicians as Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Tim O’Brien, Stuart Duncan, Kelly Joe Phelps and Mike Marshall. Beginning in the late 1990s – influenced by such musical heroes as Ry Cooder, David Lindley and Taj Mahal – Tony added slide guitar, singing and songwriting to his musical toolbox and began leading his own band. He is a tireless road musician who performs in a dizzying variety of formats: solo, in a duo or trio or with his full five-person band. He especially values the opportunities he has had to tour with such legendary musicians as Gregg Allman and with such esteemed slide guitarists as David Lindley, Derek Trucks and Sonny Landreth.
