Honors Ball 2024
In celebration of Black History Month, we wanted to spotlight some very influential African American dancers at the peak of the Harlem Renaissance in the 1930s. Swing dancing became all the rage during the Roaring '20s and lasted through the Harlem Renaissance in the 1930s and well into the 1940s. In fact, Swing dancing is still popular today. You see the influence of Swing everywhere in music, film, and TV, just to name a few. In the summer of 1928, George "Shorty" Snowden and his partner Mattie Purnell were the creators of the most famous and well-known Swing dance: The Harlem Lindy Hop. To top that off, In 1935, Frankie Manning took a chance at a Swing dance competition and flipped his partner over his back and onto her feet, and the Lindy Hop "air step" was born. This daring move made him the most famous Swing dancer of all time. Who knew that in an era of segregation these African American Pioneers of Dance, with their God-given talents, would bring people of all races, colors, creeds, nationalities, and religions together with not only the art of dance, but with one specific dance...
