Cake layers and cake tiers are two different things!

Cake layers are the the same size and refer to the sections of cake within a single tier. Most cakes are made with 2-3 layers of cake in between buttercream icing. These layers come together to make a single cake tier.

Cake tiers (a tiered cake) are composed of different size single cake tiers stacked upon one another to make a multi tier. Starting at 2 tiers then increasing upon the need for the number of guest to feed. 💛
