We host only a few private and public events per year, focusing all our energy on making those the very best they can be. We pour our passion into delivering top quality smoked and grilled meats and sides, a
nd offer some unique items you might not expect from a BBQ chef .. like our Asian grilled wings and Laotian egg rolls to name a few. Our pork spare ribs just won people's choice Best Rib in 2024 at the High on the Hog BBQ Rib competition in Fernandina Beach FL. Our pork belly is so sought after that we have a standing order wait-list for anytime we make it, and the same applies for our secret recipe spoon cornbread casserole. Apologies for not making a post sooner, but since we've been asked multiple times whether we are doing holiday food offerings this year, I wanted to make a post to say we are not. We do however recommend checking with our friends at Salt Run Barbecue and Smokeyjonesbbq this holiday season for your festive food needs. They do great work!

Into the shallow end of the pool!
Hello everyone, welcome to our BBQ page. If you are visiting our page, you have probably eaten some of our food ... or know someone who has and they told you about it. We are glad you stopped by and hope you’ll “Like” our page while you’re here. Let me tell you a little bit about who we are, and who we are not.
My name is David and I have been professionally involved with music, lighting and event production and coordination for nearly 3 decades. My wife is a musician and worked events for many years as well ... it’s part of how we met. We both stopped working as musicians and event professionals in 2015 so we could focus on family time, gardening at home, traveling and enjoying life. Spending more time at home allowed me to pursue other hobbies and passions, and cooking and enjoying good food with friends are big passions of ours. When we travel to other cities, it’s usually centered around some culinary experiences offered by our destination town.
I grew up on the farm in South GA, but also spent the other half of my childhood and adult life in the city (Atlanta GA). My wife is Laotian, had a similar childhood splitting time in the country and city, and comes from a family with unique culinary skills from Thai, Laos and Vietnamese food. Lucky for us, her family likes to have cookouts and get-togethers often, and our home is usually the venue since we have a large outdoor entertaining space. I have been grilling my whole adult life, but it wasn’t until 2016 that I purchased my first Old Country Pecos smoker and began experimenting with real wood-fired ‘stick burning’ and trying to hone my skills on the smoker. Many mistakes and triumphs later we arrive here ... still making mistakes and celebrating triumphs.
The feedback regarding our food was still overwhelmingly positive. While the kind words have been appreciated, I knew the food I was putting out could be better, and most importantly, more consistent. I continued improving my skills, and in 2019 - I improved my equipment as well by purchasing a professional competition style smoker cooker to help achieve those consistent results - and boy has it ever! My Lang smoker has made it so that the everyday smoked food products you would expect (pork butts, beef, chicken) are almost automatic. The Lang makes it much easier to achieve consistent results, which allows me to focus on experimentation, flavor and technique. I have even begun creating my own signature rubs, sauces, mops and bastes. I’m on the hunt to find that perfect mixture of wood, fire, smoke and seasonings to produce a superior product. The positive feedback on the food ratcheted up to the point where the time felt right to start OUR BRAND of BBQ and BarkMasters BBQ was born.
But, who are we? What do we do? Before I do that, I must first tell you who we are NOT.
We are not a BBQ competition team. I think the culinary gymnastics that competitors perform can impart some great wisdom, and maybe one day I could be persuaded to fill-in on a team if the situation is right. While competing is not my aspiration, I love attending BBQ festivals and competitions, and meeting the many colorful passionate people dedicated to this craft. We are NOT caterers or food truck owners either. Why not? Money and timing really. I have a passion for the work, but my career is in financial technology and I am not prepared (at this time) to quit my job and become a full-timer in the food industry. Running a food truck or catering operation is hard work and takes a significant investment of time, money and resources. We’re just not ready for that type of commitment at this time.
So, FOR NOW - we are semi-professionals, call us backyard BBQ enthusiasts if you want. Anyone who has eaten our food will tell you we are more than hobbyists, but we just aren’t your typical “for hire” food prep or catering service.
HOW CAN WE HELP YOU? Every month or so, we will be cooking. Our friends and followers will have an opportunity to obtain limited quantities of our goods. In some rare occasions, we may be convinced to provide on-site services for small to medium private events, but these will be very rare and selectively chosen. Lastly, I hope we can provide some inspiration through our blogging and sharing of our triumphs and failures with you as we continue to grow ourselves.
