My message:

In August of 1979 I walked into a city park in Manhattan, New York, New York with my big Cuz'n Tony Maurice DePina and his Friends. I was nick-named "Lighting Bug" as I was known for catching fire flies and placing them in jars. There was a DJ playing the funky parts of Disco and Funk records, and a Puerto Rican dude saying poems on the microphone, and Grafitti was everywhere. Every so often a group of brothers would start doing these different dances like James Brown and other early Black dancers. This moment was foundational in my life.

I've been a graffiti artist, a rapper, a beat boxer, a student of Knowledge of Self, and a dj ever since. While I know that the four core elements of began way before the infamous back to school party in 1973, that moment has shaped my world. Happy 50th Anniversary to Hip-Hop.

Last night I threw a 50 years of Hip-Hop party as the afterpaty of my family reunion. I played some and the soul, r&b, disco, funk, jazz, and popular music that created Hip-Hop, shaped Hip-Hop, was influenced by Hip-Hop, or developed with Hip-Hop aesthetics. I caught some flack. I got some applause. Some had a good time, some didn't. I made some mistakes, I made some new solutions. I rendered some refunds. I had a fun learning experience.

Since I was 11, I've been making something out of nothing (beat boxing and producing), mixing different components (DJing), making visuals (graffiti), speaking power (rapping), showing and proving (teaching knowledge of self), and employing myself and others (Street Entrepreneurialsm). I practice all six elements. This cultural experience has been as influential to me as all other pats of my life's development.

Here's to 50 more years! .
