Where it all began

In 1997 during my last year of Jr High my choir director Mrs. Tea asked me to run sound for a teenage production she was putting together. I remember walking up to the sound booth and being overwhelmed by all of the k***s and buttons. We ran the show off of cassette tapes. I wouldn't touch a sound board again for nearly two years.

I was minding my business in History class when a young lady and her friend said to me, “Mark you should come to the read through of Damn Yankees you’d be great!” So little background. I was pretty shy and the thought of ending up on stage in front of people, was crazy talk to me. But it was a girl asking so I told my best friend that he had to come, and we went. It was awful! I thought there is no way I can do this. So the director Jan Shelton put me in the sound booth with a senior named Trent. He taught me the ropes and I ran my first musical that spring. I went on to run sound for many theatrical and choral performances. One such performance, Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, was adapted and performed in a 70’s shopping mall. Little did we know a man would come and watch our performance and later nominate our theatre club to represent the USA in Edinburgh Scotland at the International Theatre competition. We took 3rd in the world!

Out of high school I continued to help and volunteer with the Lehi City Arts Council. It was one day while walking out of the Arts Building, I was confronted by Mindy Young a friend from my time in theatre. She was working on her Masters of Theatre and her sound guy was MIA. She had written a musical called the Wemmicks based on the story by Max Lucado. The Music was written and arranged by Steve and Jayme Smith of SoundSmithMusic. It was amazing. We toured to all the elementary schools in the valley and it was during this event that I acquired my first sound system. I moved to Switzerland shortly thereafter for a two-year service mission for my church.

Upon returning back to the states I happened to run into Steve Smith; we were so elated to reconnect. He and his wife were working on a new project called Stories in Concert and were putting on a production of “Legend of the Sleepy Hollow” in conjunction with the Lehi City Arts Council. Naturally I jumped right in and became “their sound guy.” We did many events over the years including live Choral, Orchestra, and Theatrical productions as well as recordings.
