Woman of the year Advocate and catalyst for change
Shelley Dunnam

Is a mom. Her 9-year-old daughter, Marleigh, is her driving force. Marleigh is an epileptic patient in Oklahoma and Shelley has committed her career to advocating for Marleigh’s right to cannabis therapy. Diagnosed at 10 months old, Marleigh was placed on a regimen of life-preserving pharmaceuticals. Medicines designed to reduce the number of seizures or the severity of an epileptic event. By age 4, the medicines were working less reliably; doctors advised Shelley that if an effective treatment therapy wasn’t found… This set Shelley to work, She began researching cannabis therapy, work that ignited a passion for access to treatment for Marleigh, and other patients desperately in need of a new solution.
Shelley and family recorded and shared videos featuring Marleigh’s journey, content intended to persuade hearts and minds to change, to favor medical cannabis. After the passage of SQ788, Shelley, Marleigh, and their team of doctors got to work dialing in terpene profiles that could treat the symptoms of Marleigh’s condition and researching cannabinoids that would be most effective in mitigating the disease. After six months of cannabis therapy, Marleigh experienced a remission of one year, six months, and eight days. Creating ShellD Cannabis Advocacy was Shelley’s vehicle to ensure that Marleigh, and patients like her, would be visible. Shelley’s advocacy is centered on breaking stigma through educational services at events and through her work as manager of Apothecary Extracts in Durant, a company that is near and dear to Shelley for its sponsorship of Marleigh’s therapy. Shelley knows that with proper education, she can break the stigmas surrounding cannabis and ensure that no one else has to grow up without access to cannabis – a medicine she knows saves and transforms lives.
