Was such a trip being featured in Premier Bride Northeast Wisconsin !
This one was a treat: A sweet couple, a great family, and a perfect-weather day. I can't wait to see what the future holds for them.

This one was special. I've known this young woman since she was a toddler and watched her grow up. Now living in Arizona, it's amazing to see her on her path. (And her new husband and his family are pretty cool, too!)
Tucson, AZ
I captured this sweet moment at Cave Point.
"Behind the scenes" I was shooting stills (and you can hear the camera clicking), but I also had a mirrorless camera strapped around my neck--pointed at them--running video. Back at the office, I've been working on learning editing.
This might not win me any Oscars or Emmys, and doing video with no hands isn't recommended, but I'm pretty excited with how it all turned out. Best of all, the couple gets a bonus keepsake!
I'm back! First of all, I'm back from a vlogging trip to Mexico. But more importantly, while I was away, my website and email were restored! I'll be updating things on the website--that was my plan for the past month, put on hold by the world's largest website snafu.
OK. I hate to keep posting about this, because I keep thinking the problem is about to be solved. But...my website AND my biz email are still down. Please message me on Facebook, and check out posts here for current work samples.
While we look ahead to the 2023 season, I am taking a little time to reflect on 2022. Yes, the sun has set on this spectacular year of weddings and events. I've had the privilege of capturing some amazing images of some very amazing people. I've been moved to tears at some vows, laughed out loud at some toasts, and challenged by all manner of weather including rain, wind and weird lighting. 2023 is coming up, and I can't wait to do it all over again.
Hello all. Day 12. Still struggling to solve the email/website problem. My website is off (some may actually see a very old version of the site, from many years ago.) A good place to message me for information is on Messenger. Crossing fingers this gets solved this week.
Hey friends, another update: email is still down. And now, we've discovered, an old version of my website, with old photos and galleries, is up and running. Why? The top minds don't know yet (we had no idea it was even saved anywhere.) Hoping to have a solution by this weekend. Lots has changed in the years since I had that site. I'm a different photographer now. So, please, if you are looking for updated examples of photos, just do a Facebook scroll until...hopefully this weekend? And message me though Facebook until we get this sorted out.
Hey friends, I continue to deal with a complicated email problem (I have a lot of folks helping unravel the issue.) So, please use Facebook messenger for the time being. The internet...uggh. You can't life with it, you can't live without it. If you tried to reach out and I haven't answered...that is why. Just send me a message here.
Outdoor weddings can be kinda risky in late September. But the stars and planets lined up perfectly for this couple, and the weather and sunset could not have been more perfect. (and...OK, I might be biased because I love my clients...but the couple was kinda perfect, too.)
When you walk in on the groomsmen belting out showtunes while getting ready...well, you know you are in for a treat. This wedding was spectacular in every way, but mostly the love and deep respect between everyone there. What a privilege to get to capture images of their day.

This is a really interesting article about wedding trends for 2022. One trend they are seeing is that bouquet tosses (and garter tosses, too) are going by the wayside. I've seen too many go sideways, and often DJs have to turn themselves inside out to get people on the dancefloor...and then it kind of kills the vibe. But, some couples do it because it's kind of fun, in an ironic way. There are other trends, like nixing balloon arches and party favors. What do you guys think?

Wedding experts shared which fads and traditions we should expect to see less and more of throughout this year, from bouquet tosses to sparkler exits.
On the side, I do a fair amount of volunteer photography work. I love theater and music, and it's a way to give back. I've worked with Third Avenue PlayWorks Door Shakespeare Midsummer's Music in Door County Northern Sky Theater Birch Creek and Sevastopol School's theater shows. I love all these organizations, with all my heart and soul. Sometimes I do a rehearsal or show, sometimes group photos or portraits, sometimes just raffle items. (I hope you all support these wonderful Door County organizations, too! And more. They are what makes Door County alive and special.)
When is the best time to get married? The answer is: When you find "The One." And the truth is, that might come later in life. You don't need to be 20-something to have a wedding ceremony. Have a big wedding! Have a small elopement! (I've signed a LOT of marriage licenses as a witness). I absolutely love doing wedding with mature couples--everyone has a story, and now, here they are at the doorstep of a new beginning. Here's a tip: make sure you get a photographer, because you'll want to remember this day. You won't regret it.
My roots are in black and white photography. I am "old school," meaning, I developed film and printed in a darkroom, something I was very good at. I continue to have strong feelings about black and white photography, even though my darkroom is now a computer screen. I know there is a trend to create black and white images that are all kinda "gray," with little contrast. That's not my style. I like high-key images, rich, creamy black and whites (with ALL shades of gray in between, not a limited gray scale) Yes, it's great with silhouettes, but it's fun with studio work and everything in between. (Although I've embraced color photography in the last couple decades, a part of me still thinks all photos should be black and white.)
One thing I secretly love is food photography (why a secret? I guess I haven't advertised it much, if at all.) First of all, I love beautiful food (who doesn't?) Second, when I was young, in the 70s and 80s, I used to look at food photos in magazines and be a little disgusted. Food photography went through a dark, depressing time then. Then, in 1983, I went to Germany on a student exchange trip, and one of the things I marveled at was how Europe did food photos. The pictures were close ups, glistening with butter, saturated with color...all appetizing. I was already into photography back then, and that experience stuck with me. What I learned is this: Good food photography sells. The lesson is this: If you have a restaurant or bed and breakfast, consider getting some professional photos of the food. Yeah, you have a cell phone, but it's about lighting and set up, and...it's about showing off the piece of art it is, in the best way possible (Pictured are an Washington Island burger, a Sturgeon Bay's Cafe salad, Carlsville's County Coffee drink selection and Egg Harbor's Onion Petals. These were taken pre-pandemic, and menus may have changed, but you know what great places these are!)
When it comes to weddings and other events (like proposals!) there are plenty of great emotional moments. Capturing moments of sincere joy is one of the best parts of my job, hands down. From the "first look" ceremony--if you are having one--to the happy reception celebration, you want all those moments captured for a lifetime.
Door County is a great place for a wedding (hands down!) and it's also a fantastic spot for an engagement session. If you are booking a wedding with me, they are included (a great way to get to know one another!) But you can do a photo session with the two of you, just for the fun of it. Anniversary? Special occasion? Getting married far away, but you want engagement photos in Door County? All great ideas! Plus, doing a photo session can be a fun part of a vacation.

I wish I could take credit for the sunset (and having the rain hold off for the ceremony and family photos!) The magic happened for this lovely couple-and I was glad I could be there to capture it!
Beautiful couple, great spirit. I loved getting to capture this special moment in their life.
When people with theater backgrounds marry, you get a wedding with ALL the awesome details, and a lot of fun friends. A wedding is a bit like a show, after all. The Greatest Show on Earth. Photographed with my second shooter, @James R Byrd Photography.
This couple and I...we saw each other through a lot! A snowy engagement session, a cold, rainy, dreary rehearsal night (but a hot party!) and the wedding that ended in a spectacular sunset. Such a lovely couple, such fun and supportive friends and family...it's what a wedding is supposed to be!
This wedding could not have been more perfect. Sweet couple, gorgeous setting and...that sunset...like a beautiful dream.
It was a beautiful day, even if it was a bit dreary outside. As the song at the end of the video declares: Let it rain! We're gonna celebrate!
When the groom told me one of the stops would be at Lambeau Field on their wedding day, I was like "um, please let me be your photographer." I didn't realize they would end up being the two sweetest, most honestly sincere people ever. It was so wonderful being able to capture the story of their day. (And, yes, the stop at Lambeau was really fun.)
I looked forward to this wedding from the moment we did our fun and fantastic engagement session. Just a great couple and a great group of friends and family. And we couldn't have asked for a more spectacular late autumn day.
I knew, from the day I photographed their engagement session, this would be a special Door County wedding. Ceremony and cocktails at Maxwelton Braes in Baileys Harbor; reception at Stone Harbor in Sturgeon Bay.
Fun people at a gorgeous location (how can you beat Ephraim, Wisconsin?) You could even forget it was a rainy, gray day. The food was awesome Paella Catering and McEvoy's Culinaria and the band was the best I have ever seen at a wedding Generations out of Milwaukee.
I adore a couple who can handle little bumps in the road on the big day (like rain during the outdoor ceremony!) with grace and humor. In the end, the day was absolutely perfect, and it was an honor to capture these images for them.
This sweet couple, beautiful inside and out, and their warm, wonderful families were so much fun. Loved their day!
