Have you ever heard the story of the headless horseman? Did you know it’s based on a historical event that actually took place in Sleepy Hollow? I took the most interesting virtual tour yesterday morning. I had heard about it at 10:00pm the night before. I had to get up early for it ( 6:45 am on a Sunday is early for me) and let me tell you it was so worth it. I loved taking a personal historic tour with the host who was doing a Facebook live post because she lives in Sleepy Hollow and loves Halloween. Yesterday Morning I took a virtual walk through Sleepy Hollow ! I wish I had known about it ahead of time to share with you all. This would be a good end of day activity or early morning activity. On this tour , while taking in the gorgeous fall scenery, the host explains a little bit of the history of the town, it’s people, the book and the characters in it. Such a great Halloween activity! Activities like virtual tours allow residents who may not have been able to much travel in their life time a chance to see different places around the world.
I love to be able to perform an autumn wedding, in Sleepy Hollow ! So many beautiful places to hold elopement ceremonies in Sleepy Hollow.

On September 11, 3,000+ people fought to defend our country. From the air the passengers on the planes, to the people on ground, law enforcement, medical personnel, military. Our fellow country men fought to protect itself. On September 12th America emerged injured but STRONGER than ever. On September 12th we were all AMERICANS. I reflected this while I was working all day yesterday.

Don’t let it take another tragedy like 9/11 or heaven forbid anything worse to awaken us. VOTE in November. It’s more important than its ever been. Be kind to yourself and others. Lead with love and compassion.

It’s time for Americans to RISE ABOVE!

Her car was found with keys inside of. Her disappearance is being investigated as a homicide. Did you know that the number 1 killer of pregnant women is homicide? That’s a scary statistic and I am hoping that Kassandra is not part of that statistic. I will be sharing more posts like this on Saturdays from now on. Prayers to all of those who have lost or murdered family members. My thoughts and sincerest prayers are with you.

Happy Labor Day!
One of the best activities I provided every day was a fun daily theme. For instance Labor Day, Labor Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers and is traditionally observed on the first Monday in September. It was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century and became a federal holiday in 1894. So on a day like today be would do themed activities like crossword puzzles, have a themed snack ( like the one you see in the picture ) and usually try to base all of our activities around the theme of the day right down to the music you would hear for lunch. It made everyday fun especially for the residents! I am still running my service special. You can check that out @ unforgettablemomentsofficiants.com. Happy Friday all! I am always trying to think of tips and tricks to share with you guys as far as dementia goes. Here’s one. I know this might sound crazy but aromatherapy seems to work! When I was a caregiver working in Life Enrichment, we set up diffusers in all the common areas ( like dining rooms, tv areas, library) and we used a variety of different oils i.e: lavender and lemongrass. We had a budget for the nice doTerra diffusers that have the interchangeable lights. The diffusers served a double purpose, to cover unpleasant smells ( HUGE bonus for in keeping our residents home presentable for them) and to help our residents. Now I know it’s sounds strange but this tool was highly effective on both fronts! Especially when you used the lavender oil. I can’t explain it scientifically ( maybe one of you can?) but it works! The combination quietness of the room, the smell and the cool LED lights helped with even the toughest cases of agitation. I even had a music therapy / aromatherapy activity that I used in memory care- this activity was also highly successful! I am a chronic sufferer of adhd / insomnia / anxiety and I found that the lavender does help relax me. Which tells me it does work. I found this one for my office at Walmart ( my least favorite store unfortunately and no this is not an ad), this is from the better homes and gardens brand, and the store had bhg lavender and lemon grass essential oils available. All of it was less than 50.00$ ( you will spend more other places) and so far it is working! It does have changeable light settings as well as auto shut-off when the water reservoir is empty or if it falls over. This particular diffuser comes with a free years subscription to the Better homes and Gardens magazine as well. I love gardening and cooking, so huge plus for me! So cool!

Happy Hump Day! Hope your week is going well. I am always trying to think of tips and tricks to share with you guys regarding dementia. The truth is that each case of dementia different. So tips that work with one person may not work with another. But there's a few key things that will work with everyone in general whether they have dementia or not. The first one is going with the flow. If your loved one wants to wear two sweaters ( weather permitting) then let them. People who suffer from dementia will feed off your energy whether it is good or bad. Going with the flow serves two purposes when you are caring for people with dementia. It allows the resident to have some control and choice in their life. Another purpose it serves is to meet your loved one where they are at emotionally and mentally. For example, I have had residents who frequently ask where their husband is, so I ask them “ what is your husbands name , or what time did he say he would be here?” This helps the resident to feel like you are truly trying to help them while getting to the bottom of where the agitation is coming from. The next piece of advice I would give is to use your emotional intelligence. Emotional Intelligence is defined as -the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one's emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.
Using emotional intelligence is key when dealing with someone who suffers from dementia. The last piece of advice I would give to you as carers or caregivers is to take care of yourselves. The only way you can be the best caregiver, parent, sibling , spouse or friend is to take care of yourself first. Then you will be able to help those who need your help. Hey guys! Another handfasting wedding booked!
I don’t know about you guys but I love learning about traditions such as handfasting! Don’t know what it is? Handfasting is an ancient Celtic ritual in which the hands are tied together to symbolize the binding of two lives. Handfasting is used as a verbal contract. It can be used in lieu of vows ( did you know your vows are a legal part of your ceremony? They are a verbal contract between you and your spouse declaring that you will honor your marriage)
And in my opinion, a handfasting ceremony brings a uniquely personal element to a wedding ceremony It’s a beautiful representation of the couple's promise to each other! Plus the cords used are just as unique and as beautiful as the couple the cord they pick to represent them as they unite their lives as one. The couple you see in the photo was my very first wedding! They were truly kind patience with me ( as I had never done handfasting before) and we all have become great friends! I am truly blessed to have the clients I have had. Another wedding booked! You guys! I love what I do, the couples I work for are the some of the best people I’ve ever known, and I get to give back to a community that has taught more about love and compassion than I will ever be able to express. It’s a good feeling to be able to pay it all back in honor of my beloved residents. Plus I get to see all different types of wedding in different seasons. Last year I was super blessed to be able to perform a “Holiday Season” themed wedding ( which is you know me is one of my favorite times of the year) and this year I get to help with a fall wedding! Which I could not be more excited about because of how seriously beautiful and fun fall weddings can be.
