I've always been the event planner whether it was a last minute night out, stepping in to help at weddings or planning our own wedding to Cabo for a large group of 50 guests. I enjoy bringing a vision to life and seeing the joy it brings to the dreamer. Such great information! I get asked about greenery installs all of the time. So beautiful ♡

Let’s chat about Smilax~ one of my favorite greeneries for installs! It’s so whimsical, and transforms event spaces into a lush and natural garden vibe. It’s great for arbors, stairwells, wall installations, fireplace mantles, sign decor, wedding tent entrances and posts.

Smilax is a vine that grows in the southern states of the US, so sadly it’s not native to Oregon. Smilax isn’t just one species, it’s actually a whole genus of plants also commonly called greenbriars, catbriars, bamboo vine, and sarsaparilla.

It has curly tendrils, and sometimes thorns and berries. For a wedding florist or bride, it’s super important to know it has a seasonality and isn’t available year-round. Growers take a harvesting pause usually from April - June.

When ordered, it arrives as long vines (sometimes 10 ft long!) rolled up into a dense box, called a bale or half bale. I like to time it so it arrives close to my event day. When it arrives, I unbox it partially, mist it and keep it cool until the event. At the event, I unroll all the vines onto a tarp and separate the different lengths depending on where I’m installing, and bring a variety of tools and hardware to attach it such as heavy-weight clear fishing line and green gaffers tape.

If smilax is off-season or my box doesn’t arrive in time, alternatives are Italian ruscus, deflexus, huckleberry, elaeagnus, eucalyptus, and water oak.
