Tip #4: DON’T Go Into Insane Amounts of Debt for One Day.We know, we know, weddings are expensive! But here’s the deal, they don’t need to be quite so expensive. They don’t need to, and shouldn’t start your entire relationship off with another giant amount of debt to pay back. If you’re on a tight budget there are SO many ways you can make it work. One of the most effective…either cut your guest list WAY down or ask your dearest to brings a food item to share, make it a potluck! Some of our favorite weddings that we’ve ever shot had a beautiful potluck, family and friends brought dishes that meant something to them, Grandma’s famous potato salad? Perfect! Even better, ask them for the recipes and print off some copies to include for guests to take! It makes the entire evening so intimate and beautiful, trust us, it does NOT need to be the worlds best caterer to be the most wonderful wedding, sometimes shared family recipes are just perfect. Tip #3: Write Your Own Vows. Ok, I know this is hard and scary and overwhelming for a lot of people, but here’s the deal, this is literally the meaning of this day. Why are you wanting to spend the rest of your life with this person? TELL THEM! Tell them with your own words! They don’t have to be perfectly poetic, they don’t need to be seventeen pages long, they could be three sentences if you want. What you love about them, what you love about your love, what you promise them. That’s it. Trust us, it’s worth the time and effort of sitting down in a quiet moment and being intentional about this. This is the whole reason for the day. And pretty please don’t read them off your phone, even a sheet of scratch paper looks better in photos, or better yet, tuck that scratch paper into an antique book!

Tip #2: Location, Location, Location This is similar to tip #1, when choosing a wedding venue, make sure it feels like you and your love. Outdoorsy? Maybe don’t book that Country Club your mom is begging you to choose, look for a space that feels better like a creekside venue or something in the mountains. (psst, it doesn’t even need to be a “venue” for the ceremony, we got married in the middle of a glen in Scotland with not a single chair or decoration and it was absolutely perfect for us.) if you are completely overwhelmed by this and can’t even decide on a location, reach out to us, we can hop on a call and get to know you and then recommend some locations that speak to you and your love.

We at Chasers of the Light have been shooting for almost 14 years which means we have been to A LOT of weddings. We’re going to be sharing some of the things we have learned/observed/wished for to hopefully help anyone out there who may be planning a wedding and feeling lost. Tip #1: Make it YOUThis day is about YOU, about celebrating your love and those who support that love, so make it an event YOU would love to attend. Sit down with your love and talk about what you both might like it to feel like. Get nervous in large groups? Maybe eloping is the way to go. Love traveling more than anything? Pick an amazing spot, invite a few people, and GO! Love getting super fancy? Feel free to asks your guests to dress up a little extra! Absolutely love something that is a little different? AWESOME! Include whatever that thing is, because this day is about YOU! Don’t feel like there are any rules to this, the only rule is this day should make you feel happy and celebrated, not stressed and miserable. Feeling stuck here?
