The Boise Blues Society is proud to announce these 2023 recipients of the BSU Endowment Music Student Scholarships, which are supported by BBS and the Riverside Hotel. Here is what the recipients have to say about themselves and their music:

My name is Justin Wicks. I’m a Second year at BSU and I’m majoring in Health Studies (Pre-medical). I have played saxophone for 7 years now and am playing alto saxophone in the BSU Jazz Orchestra. I’ve been playing jazz for 5 of those 7 years and love it. I also play piano, but I enjoy saxophone much more. I’m originally from Casper Wyoming, but I love it here in Boise.

My name is Richard Glaman and I am Sophomore accounting major from Seattle. I’m currently participating in the jazz combo program at BSU, and have previously played with the Boise State Jazz Orchestra. I also play around town and can be heard with the Switch in Time Big Band.

Hello! My name is Ian Niblett, I’m currently a Junior at Boise State University studying education. I love to play, listen to, and teach jazz. I currently primarily focus my jazz studies through drum set lessons and through the combo that I formed last year. We just had our first gig and are hoping to keep going! I greatly appreciate this scholarship, as it helps me to further my goals and dreams in jazz, while making school more financially doable.

This table reservation posting looks like it was done by BBS but it was not posted by BBS but rather photo shopped and posted by Heritage Social Club without our knowledge or permission. We make no money on the jams and typically lose money. BBS would have strongly objected to fees for table reservations if we had been consulted. The jams support our local blues music community. The optional voluntary donation is to help offset the cost of paying the host band who plays two sets and provides the backline equipment for jammers. By decreasing BBS expense for the Jam with the voluntary donation of $5, we have more funds to support Blues in the Schools, our Instrument Repair & Donation Program, our BSU Music Endowment Strudent Scholarships, Youth Scholarships for middle and high school students, and provids more available funds to recruit touring artists for blues concerts. If you have a local blues band who would like to host and play the BBS Jam, send your info to me at [email protected]. We would love to expand our local band resources! Billy Arnold President, BBS

September 14th in The Sapphire Room, TONY HOLIDAY presented by Boise Blues Society!!!

“Blending the cool blues-rock of acts like The Black Keys and North Mississippi Allstars with a Memphis soul sound, Holiday captures the mood and feel of the place where he now resides.”- GLIDE MAGAZINE March 2023

There’s something about Tony Holiday that draws people together. In fact, community has been at the core of Holiday’s young career from the beginning. Since relocating from Salt Lake City to Memphis in 2017, Holiday has been at the center of a soul blues revival in Memphis, anchored by a contingent of young, savvy well-schooled musicians with a “family-like” attitude and a strong belief in one another. Mentored by past legends, Holiday and this loose Memphis collective are building on the city’s rich traditions and carrying them forward.

I saw Polly and her band at the Winthrop R & B festival in July. She had great vocals and stage presence backed by her spot on band. She is well worth the ticket price! Billy Arnold, BBS
