Steven Spielberg has paid tribute to David Lynch, the visionary director behind “Twin Peaks” and “Blue Velvet.”

“I loved David’s films. ‘Blue Velvet,’ ‘Mulholland Drive’ and ‘Elephant Man’ defined him as a singular, visionary dreamer who directed films that felt handmade,” Spielberg said in a statement. “I got to know David when he played John Ford in ‘The Fabelmans.’ Here was one of my heroes—David Lynch playing one of my heroes. It was surreal and seemed like a scene out of one of David’s own movies. The world is going to miss such an original and unique voice. Playing October 5 at The Golden Bough Playhouse at The Carmel International Film Festival! 1:20 PM: “Waiter for Life” by Dan Goldes. An intimate look at a group of long-time waiters at San Francisco’s Scoma’s Restaurant, “Waiter For Life” pays homage to the American dream: immigrant stories, connections between people, and, of course, food.

“Enduring Democracy” is the do not miss documentary of the year. Screening at 12:30 PM Golden Bough Playhouse, October 6. Passes are available on our website at CIFFest.com “There is no other documentary like this in our community with such a poignant look back into the past, reminding us of where we are today. David Schendel should be celebrated for making this film come to life. It is transcendent.” Lawrence Roeck Carmel International Film Co-Director Come see a very special and rare movie about the lost tapes of the Japanese community in WWII in the Monterey Bay, and the decision of our most prominent residents to try and save them. 12:30 PM Golden Bough Playhouse, October 6. 12:30 PM: “Enduring Democracy: The Monterey Petition” by David C. Schendel (1 hour, 4 minutes with short Q&A to follow) A group of women activists combat Asian hate crimes and resist racism in war-torn 1940s California. Recently in a dusty filing cabinet in Monterey, California a local historian made the amazing discovery of a 16mm film from 1938 showing the local Japanese American community having fun at the wharf and playing baseball. Along with this remarkable never-before-seen film of a community about to be destroyed was a trove of signed petitions demanding the restoration of civil rights to those same Americans. As historian Tim Thomas dug deeper into the origins of both the film and the petition drive he discovered a story that stands as a lesson for all Americans interested in preserving our democracy.
