Say hello to Mickey, one of our talented florists at the Salt Lake Greenhouse. Since joining our team in 2023, Mickey has shown incredible growth and creativity in floral design. Let’s get to know Mickey a little better!
Q: What’s the most rewarding part of being a florist?
A: “The most rewarding part of being a florist is seeing how flowers bring everyone together. Through celebration, loss, birth, death, and healing, I get to be in the middle of it all. My designs help people smile, cry, laugh, and love. It is truly one of the most rewarding experiences ever. Another rewarding aspect is my team. I could not ask for a more accepting and loving group of people. I love going to work and being my authentic, crazy self. Most of the time, it doesn’t feel like work; it feels like I get to embrace my creativity, spend time with amazing people, and brighten others’ days with flowers.”
Q: If you could design a bouquet for anyone, who would it be and what flowers would you use?
A: “I would design something for a younger version of myself. Even as a child, I was in awe of flowers, especially their fragrance. I would choose a lot of fragrant flowers like lilac and lavender, add tulips because they were my favorite, and include petunias for their scent, reminiscent of my grandma’s garden. I’d use plenty of yellow flowers like daffodils, lisianthus, and roses. I might even add some pea pods and strawberries because who doesn’t love eating out of their bouquet?”

As the snow continues, we wanted to provide some guidance on protecting your spring blooms! When temps hit 32°F, it’s time to shield those precious plants. Salt Lake City’s last frost date might be April 26, but don’t let that fool you - frost can sneak in until mid-May! 📆 Here’s a handy list of spring stunners that need extra TLC:

Cool-season champs like lettuce, spinach, and kale might handle light frost, but watch out for Utah’s wild weather swings! 🌬️ Keep ‘em cozy with these tips:
1. Cover them with frost cloth, blankets, or sheets overnight.
2. Move potted plants into a greenhouse or indoor area.
3. Use cloches or cold frames for individual plants.
4. Take advantage of Utah’s abundant sunshine by placing plants near south-facing walls or structures that can radiate heat during the night.
Don’t forget to uncover in the AM once the chill subsides, and give ‘em a good drink before the freeze hits - moist soil works wonders! 💧🌷

POTTING
• Choose a pot with a drainage hole That will allow 1-2 inches between the sides of the bulb and the pot. Plant the bulb so that the top 1/3 of the bulb is above the level of the potting soil. The soil level should be 2 inches below the rim of the pot. Firm the soil around the bulb and roots.
LIGHT & WATERING
• Place the pot in a warm location. Water thoroughly and take care not to water into the top of the bulb. The soil should only be slightly moist to the touch and should never be soggy. When shoots appear, place into a warm, bright location. When flowering, move into indirect light.
POST BLOOM CARE
• After your amaryllis finished blooming, cut the flower stalk(s) to the base. The leaves will continue to nourish the bulb. Return the plant to bright light and water regularly. Fertilize once or twice a month with an all purpose fertilizer.
REFLOWERING
• In the fall, place your plant in a cool spot (Around 50 degrees) for about 6 weeks. Watersparingly, but do not allow to dry out completely. After the cooling period, move your amaryllis to a warm, sunny location. Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Once the bulb begins to grow, it will take 6-8 weeks to flower.
