Letting go is a way bigger act of courage than trying to hold onto to someone who doesn’t value or respect you! 🙏🏾

Apologies to anyone that this may trigger but it needs to be said....Anyone in a relationship with persons with narcissistic personality disorder please put your life, health & if applicable the life & heath of your family & children first...this means doing everything possible to leave the relationship or reduce contact as best you can. 🧡💛💜💙

What narcissists do sounds crazy to those who have never experienced it.

So when you try to explain to someone what’s happening in your relationship…

A lot of people slap a generic label like “drama” onto it without really listening to what you’re saying.

They think you’re “making a bigger deal” of something than it actually is.

They think you’re “overdramatizing” because they don’t believe things could be that complicated.

They think you’re having a “regular” relationship issue that’s just been blown out of proportion.

Because narcissistic abuse DOES sound crazy-making.

So if someone has never dealt with a narcissist…

They don’t have a frame of reference for it.

They don’t realize that things like confusion, ruminations, hypervigilance, apathy, cognitive dissonance, anxiety, and depression are common in narcissistic relationships.

They don’t get that a narcissist’s public and private face is completely different.

And since they don’t “get it” they put in the “relationship difficulty” category.

And assume that both of you are equally (or at least partially) responsible for the chaos that’s happening in the relationship.

This is another reason narcissistic abuse is so insidious…

Because when you tell people about the ABUSE they relabel it as a:

Miscommunication.
Conflict.
Difference of opinion.
Mismatch in personality.

So not only do you get disregarded…

You get looked at through a lens of skepticism and doubt, as if they’re subtly asking, “But what’s YOUR part in all of this?”

These daggers of distrust can be crushing to the spirit.

If you’ve felt this before, I hope even reading this caption let’s you know you’re not alone.

Narcissists blame you for things that don’t make sense.

They blame you for making things difficult.
They blame you for needing too much.
They blame you for being too sensitive.

They need you to feel responsible because they don’t take responsibility.

By blaming you for everything that’s “wrong” in the relationship…

They remain the victim and not accountable for their own actions.

And if you believe that you “should” be able to make things better…

Then you will feel responsible for all the things that go wrong.

You’ll think things like:

“If I wouldn’t have asked it in that way, they wouldn’t have been so mad.”
“I shouldn’t have expected that of them.”
“I brought this on myself.”
“I knew better than to count on them for that.”
“I should be able to handle this on my own.”

But this is wildly unfair and destructive.

Because you can’t fix a problem you’re not causing.

And yet, if you keep feeling like you “should” be able to make things work…

You’ll feel like a failure when it doesn’t.

Because narcissists are entitled and believe they deserve special treatment, you always feel a “pull” in the relationship…

To please, appease, and just generally do whatever they want.

But it’s essential that you learn you are NOT responsible for someone else’s harmful or antagonistic behavior.

If you’d like to feel LESS pulled to do what the narcissist demands, check out my free bimonthly newsletter or get my new best selling book! >> https://www.chelseybrookecole.com/

To take good care of ourselves, we must go back and take care of the wounded child inside of us. You have to practice going back to your wounded child every day.

You have to embrace him or her tenderly, like a big brother or a big sister. You have to talk to him, talk to her.

You can write a letter to the Little child in you… telling them that you recognize his or her presence, and will do everything you can to heal his or her wounds. - Thich Naht Hanh
