As a HoosierNative(Indianapolis, Indiana), I didn't know and wasn't taught about Juneteenth!

It wasn't until 1993 when we were stationed in Texas that Juneteenth was introduced to me.

If I'm being honest, I was confused. I didn't understand why anyone would want to celebrate being in slavery 2 additional yrs!

After a deep dive into the history behind the celebration and embracing new cultural differences within my own community.

Side Bar: Yes, cultural differences exist. A good example would be the Northerners and Southerners and then through in the Midwest, which consist of both North and South!

We've been participating in the Juneteenth Celebrations since!

So what is Juneteenth, you ask?

Juneteenth is a celebration that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Deriving its name from combining June and nineteenth, it is celebrated on the anniversary of the order, issued by Major General Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865, proclaiming freedom for slaves in Texas.
