“Breaking” into the industry is hard. Starting out in the photo video industry and walking into a wedding day next to a respected veteran in the industry.. I felt a bit like this.
Out of place.
I felt like I didn’t belong or I was undeserving of the title photographer or videographer.
Standing next to others who had so much wisdom and incredible technique.. I couldn’t help but feeling like my newness was obvious.
Well, the one thing I can agree with Raygun about is that she did bring creativity to the table. Similarly, from the day I started, until now (with years of experience under my belt), I’ve always been an artist. Not everyone will like it. Not everyone will respect it. Still, it brings me joy and it brings others joy. As long as that remains true, you guys are stuck with me!
Veteran status isn’t required —passion and persistence are your greatest tools.

Story-time…
The first time I filmed a first look, I was more nervous than the couple. I was so afraid to blow it or ruin their moment. While I didn’t “blow it” - there was definitely room for improvement.
1. Stay Quiet and Unobtrusive: Let the moment unfold naturally without interrupting. Silence your camera’s beeps and avoid unnecessary movements to maintain the intimacy of the first look.
2. Capture Close-ups and Reactions: I try to get a great wide establishing shot just before the big moment happens, that way once they are in the moment I can focus on the couple’s expressions and emotions. Use a steady hand or tripod for smooth footage, and zoom in to capture intimate details like hand-holding or tears of joy.
3. Film both reactions: If you are a solo videographer, set up a stationary tripod for a second vantage point. If you aren’t able to make that happen (sometimes weddings move quickly) have the couple face each. This way you can film their profiles and capture both reactions.
