Story-time…
The first time I filmed a first look, I was more nervous than the couple. I was so afraid to blow it or ruin their moment. While I didn’t “blow it” - there was definitely room for improvement.
1. Stay Quiet and Unobtrusive: Let the moment unfold naturally without interrupting. Silence your camera’s beeps and avoid unnecessary movements to maintain the intimacy of the first look.
2. Capture Close-ups and Reactions: I try to get a great wide establishing shot just before the big moment happens, that way once they are in the moment I can focus on the couple’s expressions and emotions. Use a steady hand or tripod for smooth footage, and zoom in to capture intimate details like hand-holding or tears of joy.
3. Film both reactions: If you are a solo videographer, set up a stationary tripod for a second vantage point. If you aren’t able to make that happen (sometimes weddings move quickly) have the couple face each. This way you can film their profiles and capture both reactions.

In my house “mom” meant a lot of things.
Teacher, taxi driver, nurse, art tutor, project assistant, cheerleader, cleaning person, chef, counselor, spiritual advisor, seamstress, fashion designer, hair and makeup artist, - you name it - my mom did it. She’s the one who not only taught me that I could be anything, she also showed me I could be everything! I don’t tell her nearly as often as I should - that I appreciate the sacrifice she made choosing to pour so much of her life into ours. I didn’t realize how tough her job was until I tried it myself. At this point I’ve test driven 8 different professions, I’ve had 4 vastly different careers, I’ve directed two companies and currently own one of my own. But this job… this job I have as a mother is the best job. My favorite and most challenging. It’s the only one where achievement matters and the return on investment is most significant! Three #weddingtips for a cinematic #couplessession
- Time: schedule at least 15-20 full minutes to spend hanging out as a couple.
-Speed: take it slow, don’t try to speed through hundreds of poses and spots. Find a handful of great spots and make the most of them!
- Do what’s natural: avoid looking to your vendors for prompts, listen for them. Stay engaged with your partner, enjoy the moment, as if you were at home enjoying time together!
